Check the backlinks of your top-ranking competitors and contact those sites your competitors are getting links from.

Most of these competitors literally have no specific backlinks pointing to their specific pages. Most are just random and spammy, which Is why I think I might rank above them with some strong links

Depends on your budget, if budget high then go for niche edit, otherwise guest post. Both are effective.

In that case I think even links from general niche sites will put you on a higher pedestal than your competitors. Also, are you sure your competitors aren't using any hidden PBN to rank?

Yes, it's a bit hard to find relevant pages. If you discover it, you'll get some additional benefit because the article already attracts some traffic.
