I'm thinking of starting a local news (politics/sports) website in English.
Is it a good idea? and What other revenue streams i can use besides relying solely on ads?

If its local and you create local audience you can sell the ad spots to local businesses directly.

hmm... so where are you going to get content from? I believe you wont be having an office and reporters on field to collect that for you

In all possibilities, I know that you are going to fetch content from other news sources, right? Tell me if that is true. (This is how many news websites work. They syndicate news and content from each other and re-publish on their portals.)

Yes, i will "auto" translate content from my language to English.
My issue is if i can get enough traffic (news niche is hard if I'm not mistaken), and how to make money from it.

Few important things to consider here -

1) Anything 'auto' doesn't go to top of search engine rankings. At least I have not seen that happening. Pls enlighten me if you have any example to show me. I will be more than happy to accept that.

2) You have to fine tune the 'auto' translated content - mostly manually, because Google is going to tank it down if it identifies that yoru content is translated and has lot many errors.

3) Only thing that can save you is manual supervision. So there is a work here for you. Don't expect to press the button and go to sleep and get up next morning to see dollars in your account.

Yes, unless you do SEO and build good quality backlinks to your site, it is difficult to get good traffic. Also you need to take help from social media.
