Newbie SEO question.....

Question about trying to create backlinks for a local lawyer site. I am helping a friend with the SEO for his firm's website. If I'm trying to rank for divorce lawyer and divorce lawyers, should I make the anchor text City Divorce Lawyers instead of City Divorce Lawyer. Will using the plural of lawyers help with rankings for both lawyer and lawyers, while using lawyer would help with divorce lawyer but not as much with divorce lawyers. Or do I need to create backlinks with both terms as the anchor text. Hope I made sense. Probably a dumb question, so don't make fun of me too bad if it is.

You should definitely go after both keywords,
Both of them are considered closely relevant by google, however having variations in your anchor text also helps you look a bit natural, so go for both and goodluck buddy

agree w farahato - go after both, and depending on how many links you are placing, you should probably even add another word to the begining or end of one of the links, to give it a bit more variety. If you added, say, 20 links with all the exact same anchor text google would likely view it as suspicious, try and make it look natural "great city divorce lawyer" "city divorce lawyer recommendation" etc.

In this one, the difference between "lawyers" and "lawyer" in optimization is very minor, so in this one, go with the one that you feel is most appropriate for the content of the page.
Weather it is a desk of laywers, or a single lawyer promoting itself.

use the one that gets the most searches in google.. if devoice lawyer gets 2,000 searches and lawyers get 5,000 searches then go for lawyers....

But

if the competition for lawyers is 1,000,000 pages in quotes and lawyer has 1,000 competing pages in quotes then go for Lawyer
there are so many variables to consider
