Hi guys, I've read up a ton of info on SEO, different methods, and everything, and I have a couple questions. I don't have the money to buy a domain or web hosting now, but would it be extremely detrimental to my site to have it on an unpaid wordpress instead of from .org and hosting myself? How would it affect my traffic? Could I keep it on the unpaid wordpress until I get enough sales to start buying hosting?

I'm very excited and I've been working 12 hour days for the past couple days researching and trying to get any kind of knowledge I can, but I still seem confused on the whole page ranking, how to get traffic, etc.

You can even earn money from tumblr, blogspot websites. You are lacking idea, not money. Go read some threads before you start asking questions..

Ok so obviously you didnt read my post well enough. I was asking if it was imperative that I get a domain right away or if I can use the free version of Wordpress for now until I get the funds. I didn't ask "duhhh how do I make a da monayz?" and if you read my post you'd see that I've been spending close to 13 hours a day reading other threads and researching.

To everyone else, thanks for the help!

To answer your question: it's not detrimental to traffic or SEO, in fact rankings might be easier. The issue is one of lack of full control of customization, access to the "under the hood" aspects of your property, plug-ins people like to run, etc. Branding wise not as professional. But as you're just starting out, go for the free wordpress. It will run a lot better not to mention much more stable than free hosting options. A great way to get your feet wet.

You can have a look at blogger.com if you are looking for a free alternative. Or else the free wordpress.com would do great as well.

And if you are looking for a cheap solution, you can get a domain for as low as 0.98$ from Godaddy or Namecheap. Use the search button to find their discount coupons.

About the hosting, you can get a free one as well or check out the giveaways section, there have been people giving away different types of hosting plans for free.

I think you misunderstood my answer. I meant to say that it doesn't matter whether or not you have a domain. It's about what you deliver to the viewers. If you just build a blog and expect 1million impression on the first day, it's not gonna happen unless you have something to share that people needs. So, forget about buying a domain if you don't have money to spend now. Setup may be a tumblr / Wordpress site on sub domain and try to earn from it. Once you earn, roll that money back into the business and buy domain and server with it.
By the way, reading 12 hrs for a couple of days only can't take you anywhere ;)

    What?

I think that it is a good way to get your feet wet, BUT, you've got to remember that you aren't in control of the hosting, so it could be pulled at any time if you post something *controversial*. I don't think Worpress free blogs let you post CB products, but they do allow amazon. Might be worth swatting up on that.

You could start on wordpress free blog, but with that said, even though you might sell some of your product there isn't going to be alot of trust from potential buyers. It's just a personal opinion but I wouldn't personally spend alot of money with anyone hosted on a free wordpress blog. If you look around the forum you will find alot of guys posting coupons for namecheap which will allow you to grab a domain for $0.98 and you could get a cheap hosting package for $4.00 a month. Id personally go that route, for $5.00 you can have your own domain and hosting, and control every aspect of your business yourself, and gain trust. Just my $0.02

Just put your hard work on YOUR domain and not mess with the FREE stuff.

You need wp plugins and themes and customizations and "stuff" in the long run to make a site generate $$$. WP.com free sites limit your abilities.

I mean you could, with dicount coupons and such, get a domain and site hosting started for like < $20.

If you dont have that yet to spend - try and do whatever you can to get that into your Paypal - - and if you cant yet - stockpile your content and ideas until you can - then launch the site properly on YOUR own domain and hosting.

Ultimately mickeydell and sputnik11 has the correct points. If you have a product, you need a domain for sure. Why not get a domain for 99 cents from godaddy, and may be, buy a unmanaged VPS server from burst.net (caution! you need to setup the server yourself and You don't have cpanel either..). That would be something around $4.95 per month , which is negligible investment really.

If you are not a pro and can't setup your server, then try an Indian shared hosting from bigrock.in (not the .com website.). THey provide you multi domain hsoting (upto three domains are allowed) for something like INR 220 with tax ($4.xx ).. That's frigging cheap too! This is not a bad choice atall, because I have also been using them for one of my money site without a single issue.
