Newbie Help w/ SEO

Ok im a newbie and have a few sites that need to traffic of course to make money.. To create traffic, i need to do some SEO.. Now I have to learn or would like to learn how to do SEO myself before i think about outsourcing the work.. My question is..

Which SEO should i start with? Black Hat SEO or White Hat SEO?
Which section on this forum should i start reading to do SEO for my site? Which is actually better starting off to bring in traffic to my site?

And if you have any quick simple easy ways or tips and tricks of doing SEO that you can offer.. I would really appropriate it
