I'm a rank newbie when it comes to SEO. I've set aside a little money to play with to try to figure it all out before doing it for real.

I've picked a keyword that I want to rank & have read a few of the guides. I read about buying domain names that contain some variation of your keyword.

What exactly should you do with those domain names after you buy them? 301 them to your money site? Set up a blog that links to your money site?

I'm a little stuck on this concept.

No, those domains are used as money sites themselves.

Thanks!

Dumb question, though. Why would it be bad to have 5 domain names pointed to the same site?

I understand you could have a larger search footprint with 5 money sites, but is that the only reason?

I honestly have no idea what you are talking about mate.

If my keyword is golf & my main site is iplaygolf.com.

I do kw research & find 5 other domain names with golf keywords in them - bestgolfplayer.com, mygolfpro.com, ihitgolfballs.com, etc., etc.

What you're saying is that those other sites (bestgolfplayer.com, mygolfpro.com, ihitgolfballs.com, etc., etc.) should be money sites just like the one I really care about - iplaygolf.com.

What I'm saying is, what is the problem with 301 redirecting bestgolfplayer.com, mygolfpro.com, ihitgolfballs.com, etc., etc. to iplaygolf.com?

Is that a no-no? If so, why?

The reason I ask - some of the articles I've read seemed to indicate that this was okay to do with expired domain names that had a lot of backlinks. I've found several expired domain names with my KW, but I'm also curious about new domain names.

Uhm, I apparently misunderstood the first opening question.

Why the hell would you redirect fresh new domains to a money site? They have 0 link juice, they are basically completely useless for SEO purposes. You are mistaking this for niche relevant expired domains imo.

Well, I don't know why you would. That's why I'm asking! :D
So expired domains, yes, redirect is fine. New domains - act as additional money sites?

Hi!

You shouldn't do 301 redirects to your money website through a domain which has nothing to do with that website.

Here's your best course of action: to have a blog which kind of supports the money website such as http://www.moneysite.com/blog.

On this blog, you should really have some valuable content with great optimized posts.
