New websites being put in sandbox?

I read some post earlier today about some guy using xrumer and getting like 40k backlinks indexed and making a lot of money from a very competitive niche.

Me personally, I've tried building backlinks to new websites but they just seem obsolete. I have 3-4 1 month old domains, with like 5 pages of content each, and each one I built like 15-20 INDEXED links (checked with backlinkwatch.com) and none of them appear for the keyword i backlinked (the keywords I targeted weren't very competitive)

It just doesn't make sense...

what do you do to avoid new websites being put in the supposed "sandbox".
