First of all I don't want to share any links here because this may be the site of a fellow BHW member.
There are a few websites (lets name them "X sites") ranking for the hardest keywords on the internet. The weird thing is that if you check the backlinks you will get a huge list, however if you check the source code:

1) you won't find links to these "X sites"
2) you will find hidden links to other sites in the same niche
3) these other sites don't 301 redirect to the "X sites"
4) I can't see the backlinks even if I change the user agent to google bot.
5) I have reasons to believe that the links have not been removed or replaced.

"user agent to google bot." - they can check ips or revdns than you can't see links
 
sounds like a smart trick.
 
Saw something similar with sites ranking in the finance niche where they go backlinks from hacked joomla/wordpress plugins. They mass updated the plugins to include the link to 'x site' then removed it again some hours later, so the backlinks were found on these pages and then removed when you actually looked.

I think the links were either showing up as display:none or left/right justified 999px.


Could be what youre looking at.
 
I came across this method just last night in terms of seeing it used. I don't know what it is but the cache is not checking out either. The website is ranking or some uber competitive terms in the health niche and is number 1 for at least 25 super competitive terms. I will study it more to see what's up.
 
They are rotating the links and ranking a lot of sites for different terms. If you keep track of one of those links, you'll see it linking to the site you were monitoring again in a few days.

Fun part is - it works as all those sites they link to are ranked and usually stay so for at least 10 days (from what I saw in the case I was monitoring).
 
Its link rotation... link are displayed on random blog for few hours... it works well before... i have stop using them coz most of my clients hate it.. they wsnt something permanent
 
Something unusual. Would surely appreciate if someone can explain it.
