i have a question about backlinks. i know the guy who is ranking number 1-5 for very broad keywords (most expensive car, fastest car, etc) if he were to leave a static link to my brand new domain, would it be the same as if i went to his page and left a comment with a link to my domain? would google rank it the same? sorry, im a noob and im trying to grasp backlinking concepts. thanks.

Yup either you get link from post or comment or buy it will be same... Only thing you should consider is "****************, PR of page, no of outbound links from that page, theme based link" etc....

The thing I would add to bizroot's reply is that if the site owner is willing to do more than just make a static link, for example include your link in a full article relevant to your niche, then that would actually carry a little more weight for your backlink than just a comment link. Also if your link is a lot higher on his page, it could possibly carry a little more weight than if your down in the footer or something. How much this matters would really depend on the other things bizroot mentioned regarding the sites authority and pr.
