So around a month ago, I started this account along with my friend. It wasn't clear for us how we were gonna grow it so we just posted ~3 times a day and followed few people hoping that they'd follow us back.

Then we used the three-day Instagress trial on normal speed to follow followers of popular accounts and also like their posts. We liked the bot so we paid $10 for a 30-day subscription.

I know Massplanner or FL are better because they allow for unlimited accounts but for now we're running only one account and didn't want to spend a lot of money.

Here are some things I think you people should know. I'd really appreciate your advice/thoughts/opinion!

    - I've been manually collecting basic statistics at the same time every day, before going to bed (1AM GMT -3). I check followers, followings and quantity of likes the posts of the day got.
    - For the first two and a half weeks, 3 pictures were posted per day. We were afraid of saturating my followers so posts have dropped to one or two a day.
    - We use Hootsuite to schedule posts. (It's free! :D)
    - If we schedule two pics for the day, we post the second one at least 3 hours after the first one, around 2PM EST and 5PM EST. If it's a single picture, then it's posted at 5PM EST. Of course the timing is not perfect, we don't want to look like robots posting at the same time everyday.
    - It's now been almost 9 days since we paid for Instagress. For the first 4 days we used normal speed following and liking. Then we switched to fast and also enabled auto-commenting.
    - In these 9 days, our followers went from 842 to 2084 (+1242). Followings went from 1248 to 2955*.
*I spent two and a half of the nine days unfollowing, which reduced our followings by around 1000. Had I not done this, our followings would be close to 4k.
    - When we started our account, we were used to see like ratios of 20-30%. But the ratio is continuously falling. In the last week, it dropped from 15% to 10%.
    - Posts only get like 5 comments on average. Exceptions are those posts where we ask an interesting question related to the image. Those get 15+ comments. We do this once every 3-4 days not to saturate our followers with questions.
    - We bought a domain so that in the future we have a simple site where we show people who our affiliates are and what they sell. There are countless goods related to our niche and we thought we could take advantage of that.
    - I watermark all pictures with our logo + instagram name.
    - There is no pattern in the design of our pictures. Pictures are either posted just as found with only the watermark being added or we think of a decent design for it. (neither my friend or me know much about graphics) This worries me a lot because I believe if all of our pictures had something that identified them, then our account would be more attractive and look more professional. Maybe a simple frame would be enough? Idk...

I'm a patient person but I'm starting to think that the growth is too slow. If the growth speed doesn't change, we'll be gaining say 4k followers per month. By the time the account is big enough to make money off it, I'll already have lost incentive in creating content.

Woah when did I type so much!? Sorry for the long thread and thanks for reading :)

It is too early for you to monetize. Focus on growth for now. Do not get caught up in small short term gains and miss up on large long term profits.

4k per month growth is about average, don't expect to grow like 10k per month like some people.
It mainly depends on niche, ive grown some only 3k per month and others 15k+ in a month. But usually its around 4-6k / month with me. Just keep at it and it will start to grow faster once you are at 5k+ and 10k+

Why would short term gains limit long term ones? What would be the harm of starting a Teespring campaign or something similar?

How much faster? I know it depends on lots of things but what would be your average estimation? 2k per week instead of 1 once I hit 10k maybe?

Depends, 2k per week would be 8k/month growth, unless you start doing manual work / lots of investments; 8k/month growth isn't going to happen after 10k, maybe once you are at 25-30k+ you can grow 8k+ / month.
One of my accounts i recently checked was at 16.5k followers beginning of this month, and now it's at 23k, expecting about 26-27k+ by the end of this month, so around 10k+ month growth this month and it's a fairly average niche.

Once you have a few thousand following, you'll get more and more people to follow you guys without having to follow them in the first place, hence why some people don't mind having random fake accounts follow them. Manual labor pays off, btw. If you're just letting a bot follow, you're not going to be gaining much. You can follow many more accounts with your hands without instagram getting sketchy than you can with bots. Once your account has a decent number or photos, followers, and has aged a bit, you can easily follow 60 every 15-20 minutes like I am doing (without bots). Lastly, don't give up on the account. What you have setup is an investment. You invest your time and work which will eventually turn into dollar signs. I know i'm new to the site and may seem inexperienced, but if you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

It will massively Stunt your growth, and make it even slower to gain followers. Create a community first that you interact with as well as they interact with you. Get engagement and followings high and you will see a lot more cash flow coming in.

You're saying yo manually follow people every 15-20 minutes during the entire day? That's tedious

I'm sorry but that's not quite right, if you do it right.. a Teespring campaign might help to grow your community and help interaction.

It depends on how you try to monetize. If you choose to be a jerk and put fake CPI offers regarding free stuff etc, people will get mad.
But if you share high quality content, even with the final purpose of selling, this won't make any problems, but perhaps even help you in some occasions!

    Best Regards,
    Jaymien.

The only reason I would be against the monetization right now would be to have a Teespring fail due to do low engagement and then giving up all together.

How much do I earn per T-Shirt? And by failing you mean sell less than how many? I currently have 2.5k followers with a 9-10% engagement
    I've never used Teespring :p

Since you revived this thread, I guess I'll briefly describe how the account's been doing and what I learned in these six weeks.

    Account information:
    - Currently at 8.2k followers. That's +6k in 6 weeks.
    - When I hit 6k followers, I started trading shoutouts with accounts that had over 5k followers. They were 3, each got me like 50 followers.
    - Engagement has dropped even more. Best post has 11% engagement. Average is 5-6%.
    - No money made yet. One person offered $40 for 3 shoutouts to be done on July. Offer is very good, probably an inexperienced user.

    What I've learned:
    - Patience is all you need. Every time I think of the rate of growth, I feel like my account grows very slowly and I feel like I wanna quit. Yet now that I just read the first post, I realise at the time I wrote it, I never thought I'd own an Instagram account that has 8k followers. That means I overcame my expectations. Even though I never thought I would.
    - Manually collecting statistics is pointless. Just check your growth at socialblade, it's free.
    - Like ratio will constantly decrease. Get used to it. It's not bad, it's natural.
    - Buying a domain is pointless.
    - Watermarking pictures is a waste of time until you become really big. Pictures are never stolen by other people.
