Just wanted to make a short intro here.

I am completely new to the idea and practice of IM. I really have no idea what it is and how to go about using it to make money. I am 33, married with 3 kids (all to the same wife), 3 dogs, 2 cats, 1 rabbit, 2 hamsters. My passion is car audio and i am hoping to use this to create my income. i am currently the technical support coordinator at a private college in Pennsylvania. I have extensive knowledge of computers and networking but i have come to the point in my life that it has become a chore rather than a joy.

I am hoping to use IM to fund my car audio addiction since its very expensive and i need to have separate funding for it so i am not taking away from the family money for bills and whatnot.

I am a fast learner and take criticism well (both positive and negative) when communicated properly.

I hope to really use this site to make it to my goal and hope i can get help via the other users here.

sidenote: i have almost NO start up capital but may be able to get up to $250 for start up costs if needed.

Welcome dude.My advice to you is to get a domain and some hosting and start some SEO on it.Good luck buddy!:)
 
I am going to have to do some research on SEO as well. Does it matter what i have on the host to do SEO? Since i dont currently have any startup capital can i use free.webs and if so what type of site should i create, or does it even matter?

You have inside knowledge in the education niche, capitalize on that.

Pretty much everything you need can be found in business and marketing text books.

Go get started with brainstorming ideas and breaking them down into steps

i thought one of the keys things was to try to work inside of something you enjoy. Of the things i enjoy working at a college is not one of them, i have also only been here a few months so i really don't know anything outside the normal helpdesk type stuff.

the only thing i truly enjoy right now is car audio. subwoofers, amplifiers, etc etc. If i am going to do this and keep myself motivated (another key point apparently) i need to do something that i not only enjoy but i have experience with. i wouldnt call myself an expert in car audio but i also really dont consider myself to be an expert in anything at all.

I dont even know what 90% of the acronyms i have seen on this site stand for yet, let alone how to implement them, lol.

Focus then on the car audio, create a WordPress blog site and make it a authority site. That means posting daily to the blog and developing Web 2.0 connections. Then you can decide if your focus is on ad revenue or if you want to resell product perhaps starting on eBay. It's all up to you.

lol u cant spent less than 5$?Dont use this an excuse man!Get a domain.Get some free hositng.Slap some content on it.Come back to BHW and read around how to do SEO...go back and implement it.Or u could have a go at amazon or ebay!Good luck to u!:)
 
I will definitely be focusing on ad revenue. I don't have the money or time to dedicate to product sale/resale.
 
oh i definitely want to do it for money (subs and amps are expensive), and i could afford $5-$10 either initially or monthly. i just want to make sure that if i am going to do this i am using a niche i am both familiar with and have extensive knowledge of so that i dont get overly frustrated and lose my motivation.

I also just assumed that product sale/resale would be something very expensive and involved. If i can make a couple hundred per month through SEO and ad revenue then i can put that profit into other ventures once i am more comfortable with the entire process.

Like i said i know literally NOTHING about any of this, lol.

I also dont want to make excuses for not doing something. I am so tired of being broke i am ready to dedicate the time needed to get this going. I figure i can start out dedicating 5+ hours per day, honestly my initial goal is $1,500 in the first 30-60 days. Although i have no idea how attainable that is right now.

Any suggestions on good free hosting sites, it would obviously need to have wordpress. i can buy a domain name that's no big deal.

well to start i have created a free.webs site. i feel like starting with free hosting/domain name will allow me the opportunity to get my ideas on to the web and start learning how to write my blogs, organize my page, and other intricate details i'm not already familiar with. As soon as i get some content on it and get it published i will let everyone know to get some feedback. If there is another area of the forum i should move on to from here please let me know.

Never ask this question again if you want to make money. Now:

1) Get a domain name for around $3. Godaddy has coupon codes.
2) Get hosting from stablehost for $4/month
3) Install wordpress
4) Start blogging
5) Advertise Amazon and Clickbank products

3-4 months later, you will gain experience.
 
any particular reason i should use stablehost?
 
Is there anywhere particular i should start reading on this site? Something that will give me the basics, differences, pros/cons of certain methods?
 
first things first. Go and monkey around with your day job and set up access to the .edu domain and start selling high pr backlinks on the forum here to make your start up capital.

you work at a private university doing technical something

the university will have a high page rank website. Links coming out of the university website will have a lot of power to rank other websites. These links will be very valuable to people in the IM industry. If you can get access to edit university webpages you will have a product to sell here on the forum. For instance if you could post articles within http://www.upenn.edu those would be what is called page rank 7 and would be worth as much as $100 a month You probably don't work at upenn but most .edu websites have high page rank

so you can leverage working tech at a university if you can get access to their website

and if you can figure out how to make that work make some links for me for giving you the idea
