What are the DONTs when it comes to inhibiting my ranking?

I am not sure on a few area, pinging, back-linking, blasting with the free backlinks?

If you're looking to rank on Youtube, backlinks won't help. Backlinks are for ranking the video in Google. I'm not sure about blasting with backlinks, perhaps someone else could help with that.

For ranking on Youtube however, retention views, likes, subscribers, and custom comments are where it's add. Social signals too. Drip feed all of these things daily, and you'll definitely be ranking.
