All these social networks are just a load of shit if you ask me. Which you didn't, but I am going to share my half witted, un-thought out ideas anyway.
The concept behind all of them is exactly the same, the only thing they change is the look, its like a giant competition for rich people to see who can make the most professional looking website with some functionality.
The next big social network will be made by a nerd in their bedroom and it will have some technology that pushes Facebook and everyone else out of the game. I have a pretty good idea at what kind of technology is next but it is still 2-3 years away. Good luck with this shit, but seriously, social networking has gotten boring.
From my personal perspective, Social Networks were flourishing as long as they were able to cover additional niches - such as dating. Many russian dating sites died when Odnoklassniki/Vkontakte (russian social networks) made it into the market. I'm not sure about Facebook, but the same probably happened there.
However, once the privacy issues hit in and the social network becomes yet another place to meet your old buddies it looses its attraction. So.cl will head there as well probably, but so far its less closed than Facebook, and people who are looking for new connections (this way or another) get their satisfaction there.
Another example, LinkedIn - stock quote $95.53. Covers the job seekers and business contacts niches. People do not go there because they want to socialize, they just find it useful.
One more, Yelp - evolution of Yellow Pages. Once again socializing is not the main idea - its useful.
