What are the most important things to do, when , and why ?

How important is it to hire an seo consultant, at what point and what if anything can or should a noob do ?

The site is a marketing website not a forum.

I would start link building immediately. You can never start too soon. Before the site launches you'll want to make sure you're on-site SEO is good for your keywords.

Mainly, and always, link building.

You have to build links. You also need to start building a list. If you get visitors now you need to capture their information, even if you aren't fully ready. That way when you launch you can contact those people and let them know. Is this the only way you plan to market the site through SEO? Have you done keyword research? I wouldn't hire an SEO consultant, I would hire a marketing firm instead. SEO is just one channel.

Open your eyes.. You have so many resources here - read through the different threads.

Either start reading or hire somebody. It isn't important to hire somebody if you're willing to read but it takes time and patience. If your budget is big enough you can always hire somebody to lead you in the right direction.
