It will be recalled that someplace on this very forum a guy was looking for a script which would allow a PayPal user to pay multiple PayPal users at once.
I commented that the whole idea was a scam and I think that your unfortunate experience has proven me to have been correct in that assertion.
The object of doing work for others, selling a given thing or providing any sort of service is to GET PAID.
The real problem is STAYING PAID!
This is why if you do not know your client well, you MUST insist on payment methods which cannot be reversed or scammed.
Western Union is your friend!
You can offer to split the $15.00 WU sending fee with your client.
If your client balks on that one; fuck him!
The client is probably trying to scam you anyway!
So you have to drive over to the grocery store to pick up your money??!!!
At least you get CASH and they can't screw you out of CASH!
After you get to know someone and TRUST them you can accept PayPal or credit cards.
Believe me, I know how much damage a PayPal reversal can do to your finances and I know what I am talking about; I have done over $100K through PayPal and have had my share of problems!
You don't know the guy; "Fuck you! PAY ME!"
I'm sorry if I sound cynical; I am! There are just TOO MANY scammers out there so if you want to keep your hard earned money, you MUST insist on a method which does not allow the client to fuck you. It is not your fault if the client buys a product which he/she is too stupid to use.
It is not your fault if the client engages in magical thinking and finds that the product is not what he/she wanted!
You are NOT WalMart!
If you have been straight with your client, you are 100% A-OK in refusing a refund for ANY reason! There is NO LAW which says that after you have delivered a product or service that you are obligated for a refund, unless....
you have accepted a credit card or PayPal and then it is not a law but rather the Terms Of Service of the CC or PayPal which go into effect and fuck you out of your money!
Did you know that under PayPal regs, the "buyer" has 45 days in which to file?
Did you know that even if the 45 days have passed and if the client has paid through PayPal using a credit card, the client may have up to several YEARS in which to contest the payment?
Yeah, Baby and if you doubt me to look at the TOS of the major CCards!
In any selling situation unless the seller is a scammer from the get-go, the CUSTOMER is and always has been the FIRST LIAR!
Ex: A guy walks into an appliance store over lunch and when the sales person asks how he might help him, the customer says, "I'm just looking!" and then heads STRAIGHT to the refrigerators! Want me to translate this for you?
This means that the guy's fridge at home has shot craps, all of his food is in styrafoam coolers on the kitchen floor and his wife has sent him out to buy a new one!
Now this guy knows fuck-all about refigerators but is too proud and too scared of getting ripped off to talk to the only guy around who does know anything about refigerators.......the salesman!
And to make matters worse, the customer has probably been reading some "consumer" guide which is published by the manufacturers themselves so we know what that's about!
Consumers also grant themselves all sorts of "rights" that they don't have and the one of which I am especially fond is the chimerical "Three Day Right Of Recission".
There NO such animal EXCEPT in in-home selling in which the salesperson has intitiated the first contact! Doubt me? Check it out!
The job is not done until you get paid but in the world of credit cards and payment services, STAYING PAID may be more difficult than selling the product or service in the first place and you must remember that CCs and payment services are ALL about the customer, NOT the seller and they will zap your funds faster than you can say, "I'm fucked!"
All I'm saying here is "COVER YOUR FINANCIAL ASS!"
My $.02.
