Comprehensive European research has found that teens are leaving the service in droves - and the biggest deterrent is their parents.

Researching the Facebook use of 16-18 year olds in eight EU countries, the Global Social Media Impact Study found that as parents and older users saturate Facebook, its younger users are shifting to alternative platforms.

"Facebook is not just on the slide - it is basically dead and buried," wrote Daniel Miller, lead anthropologist on the research team, who is professor of material culture of University College London.

"Mostly they feel embarrassed to even be associated with it. Where once parents worried about their children joining Facebook, the children now say it is their family that insists they stay there to post about their lives."

For over a year now I've noticed it's been dying in my area, kids were postings status less often, updating their profile pictures less often, logging in less often. It's actually been depressing, going from watching people update their statuses every week to maybe one update every major holiday, showing off how much booze they drank the night before. Thankfully I deactivated my personal one a few months ago. Twitter is becoming more popular than facebook in my area, guess some people would rather complain about their problems on twitter.

It is something expected when parents, companies and so on have been allowed (unconsciously) to spy on anyone they wanted to.

More often than not, people simply put it all on public visibility, then add their parents and boom, privacy is over, Facebook fun is off, and to me that is the key to whats happened.

I would not go as far as saying "its dead", so while I understand the shift towards other social platforms is pretty imminent, I believe it can definitely still be saved. Furthermore, I honestly think that tons of people still use it.

Yes tons of people are still using it, nothing will last forever. People will always want to move onto the next new thing. Some people can't even use the same iphone for a year, they get tired of it and try moving onto the newer one. Lots of younger people are getting bored of facebook. Facebook is lacking some changes.

So people who have more money are replacing those with much less money. And these new (old) people are the ones more resistant to change, meaning they're more likely to stick with Facebook now that they are on it.

How exactly does this mean that Facebook is dead?

Yes, I was seeing the similar post on businessinsider.com.
Teens from UK were saying FB is dead.

Right now for us "Internet Marketers, FB traffic is one of
the best when it comes to paid traffic. If you've played
with it then you most likely know it.

Adults are more likely to buy products, teens are more likely to join pages, teens usually have a larger group of friends to share things too, and teens can fill out surveys faster ;D

So... Less teens on facebook? Is that not a GOOD thing? The people who are left on fb are people with buying power.

Its starting to fade.. but by no means is it "dead"... just start targeting the older crowd that is now starting to join... Just adapt.
