Your first lesson: Know you're a newbie, but don't discriminate against yourself by labeling yourself as a newbie.

I hope you enjoy the feeling of succeeding or failing due to your own input. It isn't quite sink-or-swim, but rather how good of a boat can you design to prevent having to worry about sinking or swimming.
