Here’s something you may have not seen before, that I'd like to share. I've been doing it for a few weeks and it's working for me.
It definitely won’t make you a ton of money, but it’s a quick and easy way to create and upload assets that can continue to generate passive income for you without any further effort on your part.
What is it? It’s selling AI prompts on a popular marketplace. Don’t worry if you don’t know how to write prompts: I’ll show you my way and you can put your own spin on things.
Before you start I think this is best for people who are interested in AI generated art. If you’re a complete noob, please do some Googling – this isn’t a start-from-scratch guide.
STAGE 1 - Setting up
So the marketplace we’ll be using is https://promptbase.com. First go and sign up there for a free account - it's not an affiliate link and I have no connection with the site other than as a user.
Done that? Right, now browse around and get a feel for what people are selling. Most of the prompts are for images made on MidJourney. If you have a Midjourney account, great, you’re already in good shape. You can move on to the next stage. If not, keep reading…
Well, I don't have a funded MidJourney account, so here’s what I use. There are two sites I always go back to: https://lexica.art and https://playgroundai.com. They are both free and you can perfect your prompts without paying anything at all - and they deliver awesome images (but for one of them you need to play a bit smart.)
Both sites use the open source Stable Diffusion platform to create images. Lexica.art gives you 100 free images, after which they want you to subscribe. (But you can use a new email signup to get round this). As far as I can see, so long as you don’t go crazy, there are no limits with playgroundai.com.
So these are both places to test your prompts, and download images. But where to find prompts?
STAGE 2 – finding your prompts
You may already know how to set up prompts, but if not, here are a few ways:
Now you can try selling your prompt. An important aspect is that the prompt must allow the user to tune it for their needs. So your prompt must include customizable options. For example, if your prompt is this:
“woodblock print, star wars stormtrooper, full body image, wide angle photo, war propaganda, old timey, world war photo, world war, vintage poster, propaganda art”
... then make the generic version like this: “woodblock print, [SUBJECT], full body image, wide angle photo, war propaganda, old timey, world war photo, world war, vintage poster, propaganda art”
You can charge what you like for your prompt: something between $1 to $4 seems to work well.
Once you’ve uploaded your prompt with sample images (up to 9 – the more the better), then you wait for your prompt to be tested, and hopefully approved. That takes a couple of days in my experience, and then the prompt is scheduled to be made public a few days later.
Then you rinse and repeat: the more prompts, the better your chance for success.
TOP TIPS
I’ve sold a few prompts and been paid, not enough to get excited about, but hey – once you’ve done it you can leave it alone and it will continue to generate revenue from time to time, in the same way as KDP books do. And it’s a lot quicker to set up.

VERY IMPORTANT: do not submit other people’s prompts unedited - make some tweaks and see what effects you get. Once you’ve found something that produces consistent results then you can move on to the next stage.
- Another great place is Reddit: lots of subreddits with workflows you can test
- You might get some ideas on ChatGPT but to be honest, it isn’t very good although it can help with adjectives.

TOP TIPS
- A successful prompt must allow for plenty of variety in the output, but with a consistency of style. A reason for rejection is that there isn’t enough variety. Also, a prompt that produces random results also won’t work, and it will get rejected. I had 50% success rate when I started.
- For some reason I can't fathom, young women in bikinis seem to be especially popular on this platform.
- Try to find some unique style, and don’t be afraid to blend different prompts to produce something new.
