This will take some time to become culturally ok with non-technical folks. Grandpas seeing "micro.soft" instead of microsoft.com will surely think it's a phishing or fake site....

But I can see where the new gtld's may become home names but it'll require lots of publicity and investment. If you're low on cash, I wouldn't go near these new domains yet.

There may come a day when these TLDs take their place in authority and ranking beside the other TLDs, but today is not that day.

We got into several gold rushes that turned out to be fake. .info domains were the craze 10 or 12 years ago, then went bust.

check google : 99% of top ranking websites for any valuable business are .COM, that should tell us something.

The new GTLDs will be available 1st Quarter of 2014. The best names will most likely go through an auction process. For example getting lawyer.blog or lawyer.web will be nearly impossible.
