New domain or continue building on old one

Hi guys, I have a tool with a reasonable amount of usage. 2m PV monthly. Traffic is currently coming from only one source, I have been doing some target and strategic link building for the past month.
Issue is, I am trying to build to product to a whole bigger tool so a new domain is needed. The new domain is currently redirecting to the old one, do i continue building backlinks to the old domain or start on the new one?

The new domain is imperative to scaling and long time goal

to the new one, but... shouldn't you be redirecting the old domain to the new domain instead of the other way around?

Redirect old domain to new domain and request google to change the url for the site, I mean transfer the site.

New domain and new set up with old domain linking to new domain instead of a redirect imo.

Your redirect is the wrong way round to be benficial.

Have you checked the redirect setup correction? Because it's essential when using a new domain.
Anyway, build links to the new one.

Thanks guys, I'm moving to the new domain and redirecting the old domain to the new one now
