I am working on a new website with a new domain and when I added it to google webmaster tools I noticed there were already back links listed. When I do a search on ahref I get:

Rank: 0.007

Ahrefs
Domain Rank: 48

Backlinks: 311

Referring
domains: 44

Is this a good or bad thing for me? I know I did not do any of the link building so I must have purchased a domain someone else used and gave up.. Do most of you check this before buying a new domain? Anything for me to be worried about?

Thanks for any feedback!

Depending on what the links are, like if they are not related to your new domain, then sure it could hurt you.

magguy, you should check the domain before buying. I advise you to check PR of those websites where your backlinks are. The link should look natural and be in text.If not, try to remove or hide them

I usually look to see if the site had a ton of links built at once to it in majestic or ahrefs . If it did I would leave it alone ,especially if someone sold it before the renewal was up and it was only registered for for less then a year. Could be a little indicator of a issue. if your having trouble getting the site indexed in addition then leave it alone

I've created a new domain once. No backlinks, no waybackmachine history and just couldn't index it. It turned out that it was banned :(.
If you're links are not porn, pharma etc they won't hurt.

check anchor text, type of backlinks and site they come from. if it looks spammy buy a new one, also check if the domain has a unnatural warning on WMT.

If the links are related to your niche than it's good. If not I would just add them all to google disavow

Look at it using something like MajesticSEO to check the anchor texts. As long as they're not spammy the domain should be fine.

You should check that before purchasing new domain, If the backlinks related to your new domain niche then it is positive for your site otherwise it is risky :(

Completely depends on the "type" of backlinks that are linking. Check the url on wayback machine too.

check the type of backlinks and see if the domain is not banned. See the history with majestic and waybackmachine.

GWT can tell you where the backlinks are from, just download it and take a look no?

To do it right you should really check the domain and see what backlinks are linked to it before you purchase it.
Now if this helps you depends on what your niche is and what type of links are linking in.

Depends. If there are spammy...not good. Check out where the backlinks are coming from. :)

It should be good, if they are bad quality links then it's obviously bad.
