New cigarette boxes in Australia

Smoking is one of the most selfish habits you can do

I really don't understand the largely unexplained negativity. If I want to smoke, I will smoke. If you want to skydive, you'll skydive. High risk involved, possible collateral, but one isn't socially acceptable because some smokers are dicks (smoking in front of kids), and stupid people are terrified (just cause you can smell it doesn't mean it's going to hurt you). When I smoked, I did it downwind and isolated whenever possible, mostly for the smell. To be honest, second hand smoke really isn't as bad for you as many people think (at least not in the amounts most people are exposed to). It's like many other drugs (like alcohol, caffeine), it can be abused, and people do. But just because some people are dicks doesn't mean it's acceptable for people to bully a smoker when they see one the street, minding their own business. After a bit I took to blowing smoke in people's faces when they got up on a soap-box out of nowhere. Good job guys.

Btw... apparently negative images like that don't really help people quit smoking (not a fact I looked up, a comment from a psyc masters student I live with). It's more likely to make them more anxious, brooding on their impending disfigurement and death, and lead them to seek the comfort of an entrenched habit (sounds legit, anyway :/). Rather than punishing a bad behaviour, it's better to reward a good one. The behaviour is already being punished sufficiently, in my opinion, from people on the street jumping on soap-boxes, to the feeling that someone just died in your mouth. I believe smokers need more positive reinforcement, rather than just bombarding them with images designed to be horrifying.

Besides, most people in my age-group I know are already somewhat desensitised from going on that image site that is apparently not allowed to be said on the forums.

That's good. Smoking is a filthy retarded habit, and every non smoker around you hates you.

You are missing the point. It's a legal product.

I smoked for over 20 years. I never felt comfortable identifying myself as a "smoker". Smoking was what I did, and it wasn't who (and what) I was. This point is critical I think, if a person is going to successfully stop smoking. It's the difference between being a person that loses, and/or has lost, and a person who self-identifies as a "loser".

The fact that I occasionally lose, does not make me a loser. The fact that I smoked, did not make me a smoker.

I believe that when a smoker incorporates the act of smoking into their identity, and sees themselves as a "smoker", it becomes hard-wired and after that they will never be able to quit. They never will want to; it's a part of who they are. They never get to the point where they make a choice to quit or not quit, because they've already terminated their ability to choose once they've decided that they are a smoker.

So, if you smoke, and ever want to have any chance of ever quitting, you'd better learn the difference between these two ways of seeing yourself, otherwise get used to the idea of COPD and lung cancer, and dying with a ventilator. Maybe a post-surgical hole in your throat.

Smokers are filthy people. Typical drug addicts, there is no end to the delusional notions they will firmly believe in, in order to continue their filthy habit. I think as a society we are far too tolerant of smokers. We don't loudly inform them (in public) how disgusting they are, and we don't punch them in the face often enough. Smokers should be afraid to leave their house, for fear that their stink will provoke a perfect stranger into such a rage that they will wind up with blood spraying from some part of their body. I've listened to these self-condemned loser wailing on about their "rights" and how oppressive our society has become. These people adopt the same argument that they have a right to shit in the middle of a public restaurant, and they would too only there isn't any chemical reward for that behavior. "Shitter's Rights" they would call it, and indignantly defend their "Right to Shit in Public".

I got a phone call just last night from a customer, who very sorrowfully informed me that my employee is no longer allowed on the job. He stinks and it makes my customer nauseous. I've talked to him several times about this, but he would rather be a disgusting addict than have a job, and so today I'm going to fire him. Not just for this situation, but for all the previous situations and those that inevitably happen in the future. In a time of mass unemployement, someone else is losing a job because he'd rather be a stinking drug-addict than gainfully employed. If a few people had knocked this guy in the face a few times, he might have wised-up by now and quit his disgusting habit. Punching him in the face would have done him a favor, and he would still have a job. Would have done me and my customer a favor also.

Instead, the taxpayers are going to pay for his cigarette habit, then pay his hospital bills right up to the point where he finally dies.

I don't feel sorry for him. No one else should either. And anyone that does is a delusional dumbass with too much time on their hands and not nearly enough common sense to be allowed to participate in public discourse. Every day that I smoked, I woke up each morning and made a choice. I hated that choice, every single day. I hated that I had to make it, but I never lied to myself and told myself that I didn't have a choice. I was always going to quit "tomorrow". Or "someday". Next week, when I'm done with this pack, when I'm done with this carton, when I finish this job that I'm on, before I go on vacation, while I'm on vacation, after I get back from vacation, just as soon as I get over the break-up of my last relationship, just as soon as "X" happens.

Then, one day it happened. I got sick. I didn't know if I was going to live or die. I didn't know if smoking caused it, or was making it worse, or what. But I did know that it wasn't helping, and if I was going to die, was I going to die helpless and in the power of a inanimate drug, or was I going to die having the ability to make a choice to assert a level of control over my life rather than giving in to basic "urges".

Long story short, I made a different choice. Turns out, I wasn't going to die. But that didn't change the circumstances of my choice. I understood the options clearly then, and I decided to have self-control, and to live. It's been about 24 months.

But none of that "success" talk erases the truth that I also chose to be a disgusting mess. All smokers make that choice.

Okay so that's who "they" are, and that's who I am. What's relevant to the "General Public" is ownership of the air. Smokers pollute our children's air. They shit in the middle of the restaurant floor. They piss in the drinking water of the village well. And they think they have a "right" to do this, and what they truly need is for someone to punch them straight in the mouth.

Incredibly how governments just want to persecute smokers, despite them funding their own healthcare plus everyone else's.

And yet they do nothing about the food industry.

Why not put pictures of colon cancer on every smoked pork product?

Why not show someone chained to a dialysis machine on food with a glycaemic index higher than 50?

It's ridiculous how smokers are treated. Even lung cancer funding is very low because it's considered "self-inflicted" despite the fact that most cancers implicate lifestyle as a major factor.

It'll probably end up scaring some kids who see these mature images more than it will scare a smoker. Most smokers know the risks involved with smoking whether they see it on the box or not.

It's been like that for a long time now in Canada. And it didn't change a damn thing lol

You're right, smokers are filthy people. There are only a few types of people who are filthier:

- The ones that don't wash themselves daily - shouldnt be able to leave the house as well

- The ones who have no taste and use bad perfume - should be punched in the face often

- The ones who let their dogs shit on public and don't clean after them - should be afraid to leave their house

- The ones who sweat badly and stink in spite washing themselves daily and using a good perfume

-The ones with stomach and dental diseases - whose breath smell like hell

IMHO I feel much worse next to the people described above, and yet I dont call to punch them in a face or lock them in their house, or increase the tax for bad life-style. The above serves as irony, to show how far one can go if he finds an idiotic goal in life. Smokers are by far not the worst people you will meet in your day by day life.

How to monetize this new law in Australia.

Sell something like this http://www.bewild.com/geleauricica.html but with more bolder and attention grabbing colours with brand logos on it.
