Long story short:

I signed up for a 1 month free trial webhosting package with an empty visa gift card. I forgot to cancel it, and 3 months later I received a letter in the mail saying I owed 80$ for my 1 year . I said, hah whatever they can't make me pay. For the past 2 months I have been getting constant letters/emails/phone calls from them demanding their money, even tho they can just cancel my f***ing account and call it a day.

NEVER GO WITH 1and1, they WILL screw you over! I ended up just paying the money so they would hop off my back

I had a bad experience with them too. I tried to register a domain and they never processed the order. They said I needed to call and talk to their security team. Once I called, they said they had no record of my order. So I gave up on them and never looked back.

I've tried once to buy 5 domains, applied, entered everything, they said cc was good and everything went well. I thought I will hear back from them... I heard back from them... Well... Never. LOL

What do you people do at 1and1? I use them for loads of stuff and they are fine.

I have bad experience with them too..they collected payment for an order withiut sending any notification or login credentials....when i contacted support they asked me to contact their security team after some days they answered back "your order is canceled" reason???"our service is not availible for your country"...to avoid like a plague..

I tried 1&1 also and they didn't even let me use my domain. It was locked. They had already taken my payment and when I tried to ask for a refund a few days later, they did not answer. They took my money and my domain. My domain was good but too bad.

Been using 1and1 for 4 years now. No problems, I've used their hostings, cloud servers and dedicateds. I remember once I had a problem with the htaccess of a website because of the friendly url's and they replied with a solution for my htaccess very fast.

Well I suppose if they keep running a server for you 2 months without paying they will annoy a bit hehe.

Same thing here, bad experience. I use to have a dedicated server with them back around 2000-ish. I was reselling CS servers back then. Well the server went down for some reason in say May. There was some big VISA hack back then, my card was canceled/new one sent out for precautions at the bank. Now this happened in August and they wouldn't cancel the server, wouldn't give me back my money, and kept charging me. So when the card got canceled it was finally done with. Well they're still contacting me saying I owe them for a full year of a dedicated server that I had no access to. They still send me letters in the mail, and put it into collections. Currently fighting it since I had no access to the servers at all, and even told them to cancel way before hand.

So what's the problem? you didn't cancel so now they want their money, plain and simple.

Personally I used them about 3 years ago, I cancel my hosting because of no Cpanel and also moved my domains. Never had a problem.

The thing is,you should cancel the account in the first place,and it's really your mistake because you haven't done it earlier.
I'm not saying that 1and1 is great,cuz I had some bad stuff with them in the past,but not like that..

I get on great with them, sure their sales and billing aren't the best but their servers and spot on, uptime is great and their techies know what they are doing -
I had an issue the other day where 1 site got hacked so I ask for a backup, within two hours they'd sent me the backup of the entire account (3gb + of data).

I would use them over any other company for web hosting.

I have been a long-term 1&1 customer, but I finally given up on them because of the horrible customer service regarding my private domain registrations. When I wanted to transfer a couple of my domains to NameCheap, the authorization emails never came to me. It took a while to track down but it turned out that every one of my domains registered during a certain period had a bad proxy email address that 1&1 could not fix. So I had to change my private registration to public to receive the authorization emails. Now I use NameCheap exclusively.

To some of the people writing in this thread about billing problems after you've given notice that you no longer wish to use the service, you will probably find that you signed some kind of contract with 1&1 for at least a year. It is been my experience that it looks like many services are offered on a month-to-month basis, but if you read the contract carefully you will see you are signing up for a fixed term. A lot of times if you attempt to terminate the contract before the term is up, 1&1 will not accept the termination and keep billing you for the balance.

they use the same techniques aol used to use in the 90s - keep billing customers till they cancel their credit cards
