In my experience, a mix of image links are easily justifiable and in general should be a good part of the mix.

This is the answer but what @ThisIsMyLife is saying is partially true, yes a backlink EVEN if its an image help for sure, but some forums make nofollow all the bakclinks that are pointing out, no matter if they are images or links, so if the advice is that image backlinks still count YES that is true and it is an under used technique BUT saying that inserting the images of your website in forums is the way to go it is not exactly truth because it depends on the configuration of the forum.

It isn't clear from your original post what type of image you're referring to.
Are you referring to use of an image in an anchor, or as just a hotlink, or in an iframe?
If it is a normal link that uses an image as the anchor then of course, link juice will be passed just as if the anchor was text.
If you're hotlinking, no link juice is passed. That is at least what Google has said, reported by the blog posts I've posted.
Frames are a way of displaying other content (usually another webpage) in a page. Most SEOs think that they don't pass link juice - even Majestic thinks that they are "largely irrelevant". https://blog.majestic.com/training/a-guide-to-the-majestic-site-explorer/
In any case, even if the link juice is passed to the image, the image does not pass it on to your pages. That is what Google has said at any rate (again, in the posts I've quoted above).
Of course, what Google says isn't what Google does. If you've experience of this working, it doesn't matter what Google wants us to think.

Nofollowing every link can be initially declared from the meta HTML tag where which you can noindex, nofollow all. If this tag wasn't found in the Header of the HTML file, then the anchor with nofollow tag will only be nofollowed. And everything will be just fine. And again I just checked on my competitor in Moz OSE, the statement was crystal clear:

And they were Image Links <img> (Hotlinking Backlinks) with no alt tag.

So a while back I would've agreed with you completely. However, no-follow links still count, they can be especially creating topical relevancy and authority. I honestly don't believe the no-follow attribute devalues a link value much if at all.

No-follow links also seem to count in the assessment of whether you have a spam backlink profile. Building up no-follow links from forums is a good diversity technique.
