Here's a little story.

Two weeks ago, i found a keyword with 14k+ exact local search, cpc ~$1, low comp.
Both of the .fr and .com EMD were available. I bought the .fr, because my keyword is in french and it would be easier to rank.

Today, i had a look at my ranking and i found the EMD.com ranked with a site.

I was like "F****CK, why didn't i bought this stupid domain ?!"

So now, my site is still not finished, i've only setup a wordpress and wrote like 100 words or something, i don't care about the ranking, but about the fact that now i've a competitor.

The moral of the story, if the same domain as yours is available with a good extension: BUY IT.
I know this is not a news but whatever...


Well, now the serious part: due to the fact that the site of my competitor is new, should I blast his site with 100k dirty links ? :D

Don't think blasting your competitor with dirty links can harm him too much. There's a service called Spam gone wild, which kinda proves that even dirty links can be immensely powerful!

I'd rather build a site of greater authority to outrank him; better investment of resources.
 
Blasting your competitor's website with dirty links won't affect his reputation.

Google, somehow, discovers whether links are not created by the competitor for ruining website's reputation.

So, don't waste your time.
 
Why not you spend your time completing your site rather then going into any elaborate skim.As your site is .fr little link building will knock out .com within a day or two.
 
this happened to me 6 months ago . i had the oppertunity to get the .net and .org but only got .org.

now my competition is rank 1 and im ranked 2.
 
Yea, think of it as a challenge.. and because your on BHW... an easy challenge. You can rank the .fr easily. Some web 2.0, edu links and social bookmarking will be a good start. Good luck!
 
That's why I have bought up so many domains! Don't miss out on hot opportunities.
 
If you have the FR domain, and the keyword is french lang related, you will outrank his site!
 
Yes guys, as i said, i know i will be the first (:D), but i don't want him on the second place...

That's why i was asking how i can get him a penality...

The tip will still be useful to a lot of people that are just starting in IM. Thanks for sharing your experience. I regret not buying the .net and .org extensions of one of my best money makers. It's an EMD as well as a single common use english dictionary word, and all domains were available at the time I registered it. I managed to secure the .org years later but at a steep price, and the .net owner is still my fiercest competitor.
 
hello would like to ask you something,

why did you bought the .fr and not the .com domain?
since your trying to rank for a local keyword from a specific country shall you always pick that country domain and not the .com? why?

Also is the domain that you bought the .fr from the same country hosting?
 
To be honest it doesn't really make any difference. If someone's taken another free emd they had their eye on the keyword.

There's really no difference between:

foobar.com or foobar1.com etc

The main thing is just having all the words in the domain. From there it's then down to on-page seo + offsite. If someone really wants to compete with an emd you can't stop them registering foobar1.com, foobar2.com and so on.
 
Yes, but in my case, i think i've now a competitor because the EMD.com was available, not because my niche is very profitable.
Don't leave any doors open to your future competitors !
 
I have found that buying every EMD available and doing 301 redirects seems to help with ranking, too. Not a huge amount, but it does seem to have an effect.

Yeah, I agree with you there actually. Most would have just moved on after the initial emd check failed.

The only ones who would have got the emd1.com would be ones who were going after the niche regardless.

It's best to get each emd then treat them as separate sites; Unique content + hosting + backlinks, then you end up with all 3 of them on page 1.

Depends how profitable the niche is really.
 
Lol don't dirty link the man, be the better man. Also you learned something from first hand experience, therefore from now on you will never make the mistake again so don't worry. Cheers!
