Network Solutions has been caught buying the domains you are checking! When you check to see if a domain is available, Network Solutions records it. If you do not register it right away, they reserve it! This means you now have to buy it from them or wait 5 days and is called Domain Front Running:

    And the NS response:

I kind of like the idea of "domain tasting" as the VP of NS so aptly put it.

I learned a long time ago to never search domains unless I am sitting there with a credit card in hand to buy them on the spot.

I once lost a very valuable domain by waiting half an hour to make the purchase after I had searched it.

    Use'em or lose'em!

I only search using my host, 1and1, and all that I've "checked out" are still available. :D

I use http://www.name.com to check for domains. They let you check several extensions at once. Plus they only charge $6. a year.

Dunno how good they are, tho...

Yep! I couldn't believe that the domain I wanted was actually available, since *every* other version of the name was taken! The only error I made was registering it thru my hosting company. Didn't know that it was a good idea to use a registrar service -- cheaper and you can move your web site to another host.

It's also a bad idea to pay for a year in advance. I got a discount, but I'm now locked in with a company I don't like 'til December...

I don't know how that company is still around ...they are scum.

    That's big business for you...

I wouldn't be surprise if they were the ones behind the Direct mail and Email Spam that sends you what looks like an authentic bill to renew your names.

You guys know what I am talking about? That is the dirtiest scam. It looks completely like an authentic bill to renew ...then says "This is not a bill. This is a solicitation".

I am sure they get tons of people on that ....especially with the direct mail approach. And the prices for the renewals are outrageous. They add in a bunch of other junk services to try and justify the costs - like search engine submission ...LOL. People think direct mail is still legit. I would like to see the Government's arrest the companies that send me "REAL" physical mail. All those shitty offers. Those companies are the real criminals.

Anyway, I am sure it's not them ...just had to get my rant in. LOL

Doesn't change the fact that they are still scum.

You know, whenever I would try to click on a NS banner, my K9 program would block it for 'malware'.

    Now I know why...they're shady.

Yes, this is true. I have heard it from several people on the warrior forum and elsewere... Network Solutions is not to be trusted at all. If i am going to check a domain I usually just try it in my broswer and then maybe use whois.net, but like Uptownbulker said, its better to just have your credit card in hand and be ready to buy it. When i first registered a domain in 98 you had to go through network solutions... it cost $70 for a domain and then $35 a year after that.... if i remember correctly (i was only 12). can anyone else remember that?

I thought ICANN changed their rules very recently to disallow domain tasting and the 5-day grace period so this is not allowed anymore.

Network Solutions also makes you jump through hoops to change your DNS servers or transfer your domain away from them. I kept one with them for several years but finally moved it to GoDaddy. GoDaddy may haveits drawbacks, but I have found it very easy to add and change domains with them. I only use them for registration and DNS server pointing.

better watch your a$$ at godaddy man... they suck as much as network solutions - one spam complaint, domain suspended - I "Love" them....

PS: and I mean it kind of - 'cause the reason I love them is: it is soooo easy to get competitors domains shut down for spam they didn't even send LOL - sooo blackhat, but soooo good
