So I'm attempting to verify my PayPal account, and none of those prepaid debit cards will accept me because I'm using a different address than my license says. All of them, except netSpend. But the weird thing is that I just signed up with them 5 minutes ago, and I have a bank account number for use with Direct Deposit. What's so weird about it? I DIDN'T give them my social security #. How would there possibly be a bank account in my name without me providing my social?

But my real question is can I verify my PayPal before I get the card (since it hasn't been mailed out yet)? That is, can I set up PayPal to transfer like $5 to the netSpend account, then do the verification process where they withdraw two small transactions? Or will my money simply disappear since I don't have the card yet?

BTW: I'm using my real information, but due to financial troubles I can't get a real bank account at this time.

BTW: I've read a lot of threads on how PayPal does not like using netSpend. But I'm not too worried about that because I am in fact a real person. I have the identification paperwork to back it up, too, if paypal was to try and suspend my account.

i'm positive Paypal doesn't like netspend, and will send you this as soon as you try to verify:

This bank account is disabled for entry into the PayPal website. Please add a different bank account instead.

If you would still like to use this bank account, you may fax us a copy of the bank statement with the two amounts PayPal deposited in your bank account shown and a copy of your driver's license or other photo I.D. You must use this form for your fax cover sheet and send the fax to (402) 537-5780.
just open a free bank account and deposit $10, walk out with your ATM card. or change your driver's license address (unless it's stolen/fake.. in that case buy a better forgery this is what China is for and it's only $85)

Can't do it, no bank will allow me to open an account (debt collector issues)

I have verified a paypal account with a netspend account. They don't need your social. This was 2 years ago, so paypal may have changed stuff up.

But it used to work at least...and no you just need to use the routing number/account number from your control panel after you login. You shouldnt need to wait for the card.

Well, I decided to just say screw it and tried it. Paypal says within the next two to three days, they'll make two small deposits into the account in 2 - 3 days. Didn't recieve any error messages, so hopefully everythings cool.

I have like $500 I can't touch, and it's SOOO pissing me off, especially because there's like seven dollars in my pocket at the moment.

Don't you think it's a little scary that someone can open up a bank account under your name without your social though? It just seems, sketchy.

Yeah I just signed up with Netspend and was able to link my bank account with them to Paypal, but for some reason they "can't verify" my Netspend Credit Card (which is fully activated and everything).

So you should be fine for being able to use Netspend's Metabank account, but unless anyone knows why THAT'S working and the CC isn't...

Help, us, please?

I kinda figured that already. BTW it looks like my netspend account isn't getting the verification transaction from paypal. So for anyone trying to do this i'd wait for the netspend card. I think the bank account is somehow disabled before you do activate the card.

Also, my METABANK account number is 14 digits long (bank accounts are 10 digits), anyone know whats up with that? I'm using the last ten digits as the account number. The first four don't seem like they belong (an even thousand number, like 10003707641799)

you more than likely cant open a bank account because of chexsystems, you probably owe other banks cash. heres the deal, google chexsystem dispute forms and generally during disputes which last around 30 days they remove the negative information from your account so when you go to a bank you do not owe money to you will have a clean chex profile for them. Not sure if this still works, did this for a girl a while back. Dont worry about debt collectors either, its my understanding that in the usa the first 1800 in your bank account is exempt much like wage garnishments where most of your income is protected. Check into it but you should be fine.

...we're talking about merely getting Netspend to work with PayPal. What are you talking about?

rpm issues cards by metabank, i think 14 digits is the 'new' method:

Bank/Financial Institution: MetaBank
Bank/Financial Institution (City/State): Sioux Falls, SD
Type of Account: Checking
Routing Number: 073972181
Transit ABA Number: 1000 plus the last 10 digits of your RPM Card number

Im talking about the guy getting a real bank account he seems to be afraid to get for false reasons or lies some debt collector told him...

I don't like real bank accounts because people have managed to pull money from them way too many times.

Got the NetSpend card in the mail today, so I'll see what I can do with it.

Thought I'd give a little update.

I got 2 cards in the mail, bankfreedom & netspend, and I've been able to confirm both of them with paypal (deposits only took 24 hours, WOOT :D). But I'm going to attempt to clear up some confusion on why I believe people are having a lot of trouble with this:

  1. You cannot transfer money into netspend until AFTER you activate the card, any deposits beforehand will be refunded to the sender. Yeah, even though they give you a bank account number and let you log into your account.
  2. Paypal + METABANK = Working. Really, paypal + any bank = working, as long as it is a US-BASED bank account. I'm not sure if netspend works out of the United States or not with a different bank, but if you're trying to do that it WILL NOT WORK.
  3. Getting a PayPal account verified using a pre-paid debit card itself does NOT seem to work, just use the bank account.
  4. If you've tried to confirm the bank account before you got the card, then realized you can't receive the money until the card is activated, you CAN'T try and re-confirm the card with PayPal. PayPal will NOT re-send the money. You have to call paypal customer support and talk to a live person (press 0). Sound like an idiot as much as possible and the lady will put you on hold, talk to her manager, and re-send the money.
  5. Trying to withdraw money to my card (as a bank account) did not work properly until I verified the bank account. The thing saying you can withdraw up to $500 while it is un-verified is BS, and the customer support lady told me that. Any withdrawals to my unconfirmed bank account got returned within 24 hours of making the withdrawal.
But yea so far I've got 2 cards to work (confirmed): NetSpend and BankFreedom. They both use metabank, however the BankFreedom card is slightly cheaper (waives the $10 setup fee and $10/monthly fee if you use direct deposit of at least $350 a month, the ATM fee is 50 cents cheaper, Signature purchases are free, PIN debits are $1 cheaper). But the downside is you can't make VCCs like NetSpend.

That is it. Moronic Kaos got is all right.

It is true you get the bank account details, but you have got to wait, get your card and then activate account before doing anything whether Paypal or Direct deposit.

Getting Netspend to activate your account takes some efforts. They ask you to call them Of course you have to use a US number or u are screwed. Then they ask you to fax or email your passport and wait for the activation.

After they activate account, then you can use.

I use BankFreedom and I've had deposits made before activation and they process just fine. NetSpend is tricky and they will close your account the minute you leave it idle or receive a large deposit.

BankFreedom has good customer support, and they will generally resolve any issues by phone. If at all possible, stay away from NetSpend. It's not worth the hassles that they normally bring.

Another alternative if you're not wanting to use a real bank account is ReadyDebit. They work seamlessly with PP, and deposits aren't an issue with them either.

I will update my experience with the netspend + paypal in a few days.

@Bullseye-thanks for mentioning the other two also.

Any updates here? I almost got screwed by netspend... removed added bank account from paypal, waiting for the card to activate.

Hope PayPal won't close my unverified account.
