I'm about to build an authority site that I hope to rank for about 50 main keywords (and thousands of long-tail) within 3 months.

Unique content, PR links, social, bookmarks, blah blah...
Regular SEO stuff, I do this frequently with .COM TLD.

For this project I have only .NET and .ORG available.

All things equal, would you go with a .NET or .ORG?

What is your opinion on which TLD has been easier to rank (in your experience)?

I think both are same, equal benefits.
I will go for .net (No Specific reason for this)

From a SEO perspective both are the same. However, to me .org is usually viewed as more authoritative since it is really supposed to be used by things like non-profit and other types of organizations. I have had good success with them.

I will go with .org for authority site..just like wikipedia..why they go with the .org and not .com or .net? just my tought..:)

It depends on the niche really. Personally, I'd go with a .net if it's just things like mandatory CPA offers for certain information or downloads. If it's for generating an email list and having a membership site and things relating to that, I'd go with a .org

I would go for .com, follow by .org

.com and .org are more common in the offline world, because real organization and non-profit organization use them.
.net for most people (except for us geeks here), wont really know what the real meaning behind it.

You really dont see any popular/big organizations using .net

But then as mentioned above both other users, it really depends on your niche.
I am just giving my 2 cents anyways.

This could go on forever. It just resumes to what kind of site you're having. And I don't believe that .net or .org gives more power in ranking, compared to each other.

.org is for organizations (especially non-profits). Go for .net (think of themeforest and their entire network, psdtuts etc.)

Both are the same but personally I would go for .org for psychological aspect (people think that it is more trustworthy - as supposedly an "organization").

Always go for .net if .com is unavailable. .org should be your 3rd choice after .com and .net
