Hey,

I was searching around and wasnt really able to find what I was looking for. Does anyone have any positive or negative experiences using .Net domains over .Com?? I have always been against .Net but it seems that all of the .Coms with the keyword I am looking for are taken. But I can pickup good domains that are .Net. I just dont want to rank well and someone comes out of nowhere with the .Com and tries to steal traffic or something.

Also does this affect SEO in ANY way?

I just bought .net today. Two related key words 3 year old domain, lots of google searches for these two words. The same named .com site hasn't been developed yet (it was just a parked page script), and it was advised to me (not by someone on this site) that if I hurry and develop the .net site before they develop the .com I could take or file legal action and have the domain taken from them or prevent them from developing it if they do try to develop it.


Not sure how accurate that is.
 
If the .org is available, you will actually do better with that over .com or .net
 
I find that .com and .net have about the same results. Never had a .org. My experience with .info's have not been good. While they may eventually rank well, I am convinced they start out much more poorly.
 
I plan to spend alot of time and resources on this domain and I want to make sure I play my cards right. Since the .Com is taken and has a parked page I feel no immediate threat BUT that doesnt mean that someone couldnt come out of the woodwork and possibly overtake my positioning. If that does happen then I want it to be about SEO not about some extra push because of the tld.

P.S I have contacted the .Com site owner.. a total ass.. he told me he wants $25k for the domain.. its definitely nothing special and he has no search positioning AND the exact phrase search of his domain is only 5,400! Ridiculous.
 
There really isn't much of a difference with the endings nowadays. Just develop the website really well and you'll still rank high in the search engines.

Really, the only reason to get a .com over something else is so it's easier for people to remember.

Now I need to reconsider the domain I was going to choose! It was an exact phrase domain but not the primary exact phrase I am targeting.. Hmmmm..
 
What if the domain is... keyword1keyword2keyword3.com and my primary exact phrase im targeting is "keyword1 keyword3" and the secondary keyphrase im targeting is "keyword2 keyword 3".. any thoughts with this type of layout?

Go to the seomoz link I posted.. they talk about the impact of longer domain names on ranking. The longer it is the more negative impact it has.
 
I did read that. They note that it's not a big deal. So I think the benefits of having an exact search phrase plus including the primary target keyword in the domain outways the negative with domain length.

Total domain length without tld is: 15 characters.

.net is good .com is always slightly better, but the key is to have the main keyword or keyword phrase in domain if you want some kind of SEO relevance.

Yep, there you have it, .org is slightly more to buy although has always delivered great results (in terms of SEO) for me too...

Sure sounds reasonable then.

Personally I prefer to keep my domains as short as possible. 4-6 characters if possible. However I am comfortable with up to 10 characters. After that it appears to be getting to big to me.

Ain't that funny how these assholes out there bought up these domains, never developed them, now want to make ridiculous bank on some pipe dream investment they sat on for years. I hope they all rot in hell because I've delt with them online and in person and they're usually complete and total losers.

Definitely agree some people are rediculous. The domain was purchased in 2008... Seriously.. not one special thing about it! I would like it cause it has my target keywords and its somewhat catchy.

It ticks me off constantly. Even when I think I came up with someone new, someone had registered it, and yeah, it's just a holding page. I don't mind so much if it was an actual site and they were doing something, but to just register it and not do anything, and basically e-cock block me from taking the name I really want just sucks.

These idiots are going to be waiting a really really really long time for anybody to come along wanting to pay them what they want. New extensions are coming out all the time. Take a look at .co. All I have to do is register a .co with my trademarked name, and just go over to everyone else in every other extension and take whatever they got. Bye bye investment. Punks!
 
Very interesting on the .co. I'm anxious to see how far it goes. I can't say I'm a believer yet on it's domination of the other tlds but we will def see. Either way good info and thank you for sharing.

At this point I am leaning towards the .net domain. It's not uncommon in my niche to have a .net and the 15 letter domain doesn't flow as well as I'd like. Still strategizing tho.

Sometimes acronyms are your friend when it comes to shortening your domain naming... K.I.S.S :)
