I think most people are wrong believing they have been hit by penguin or Panda. In fact, they just lost a link. It often happens with links from forums and blogs as the pages are dynamic. When the link does not appear on a ranked page you lose a huge amount of google juice. You can see the lost backlinks in majesticseo or ahrefs.
White hat seos sees 100 incoming domains in webmaster tools and they believe it is a lot but google also count domains with nofollow links and there are also links that are already gone or that said a small fraction of pagerank.

If after adding a link to your website from another website... If the webmaster adds also 100 external links to its page, you get then a small fraction of google juice. That's why you may also see a drop in ranking.

Negative SEO only happens if google sends a message saying they have found unnatural links to your website.

Unfortunately, we have entered into the wild wild west thanks to google. If I were you, I would take an inventory of your URLs and then try and remove the ones that you didn't create or are spammy. Then you will have to try and remove them if you got a webmaster warning.

Google sucks big since they have created negative seo that is furthermore destroying peoples hard earned sites.

Mate you will need to remove your links its the only way to get a penalty removed or stop a negative seo campaign.

I wasted my time for months with disavow tool, doesnt work at all until i start deleting the links.

I'am being nuked with Negative SEO since few days ago. The number of bad links is now 50k and it is growing continously.

I can not send XX,XXX emails to XX,XXX webmasters and ask them to remove hundreds of thousands of backlinks. And most of those webmasters do not care about their sites because they dont even know their sites are being spammed in comment sector for years.

Disavow tool seem to be my only hope.

Disavow not work at all or not work for me for the past 1 year. Big G want us to kill each other, so the only paid traffic will stay.

The disavow tool works. It was offered precisely because webmasters cannot remove links that are out of their control. I've been hit by a negative seo campaign as well, and I can tell you nobody removed any links when I asked. So disavowing was my only way out....

Do you have any luck on using Disavow tool to fight against Neg SEO ? I'm under attack now, GWT still not showing new bad links. I guess i have to buy an ahrefs account and start to prepare my disavow list asap.

You can really go for the disavow tool if you are sure that your website is being blasted with bad links (totally spammy).
Though I don't really do this with my websites, whenever things like this happen with me, I build some high quality links to my website to overrun the bad ones.

You have no clue what your talking about, negative SEO is rampant and getting worse, you don't need a a message from Google to inform you of unnatural links. For 5 bucks you can send 300,000 spammy links to a site and the normal Google algo can wipe out that site if its not strong enough to handle them. Google has caused this to be such a problem and now they don't know what to do about it.

Disavow works if you show Google that you tried to remove the links mate. OTherwise its a recipe for rampant abuse by Webmasters. WHats stopping me from spamming the world and then just disavowing those links that I dont like the link value of?

When Ive had my link removal campaigns done from link delete they removed 40% of the links in one month. SO links can be removed it just doesn't seem like you were doing it right.

To each there own though. Waste time with disavow or get it done right the first time?

Did you have a manual penalty or algorithmic? Just curious because Google wants to see some effort to get a manual penalty lifted. This is a huge burden for the small guy or business just trying to compete online, and they may not have the resources to make an effort to remove all the links if hit with a large scale negative seo attack.

It just burns me when I see small guys get nailed when big corporations are essentially whitelisted and held to an entirely different set of rules. These stupid ass link penalties are about as anti-small business as it gets. And with the holiday shopping season around the corner, I can only imagine how bad it is going to get.

i couldnt agree more mate

it is fucked up but its because Googles algorithm works on a large scale, and its easier when working on a large scale to take shortcuts that just "work" instead of making it perfect.

keep in mind googles goal isn't to have the algorithm ever be perfect. they want it just good enough to make sure that people still click on the ads.

ads drive revenue and revenue drives all businesses.

thankfully there are solutions and services to help these days. I just find it odd that people wouldn't think twice about building and buying backlinks but won't do their part to clean up the mess they created. in most situations people that were hit wre because of their own doing and not negative seo.

you buy links you need to buy to clean them up when you get hit or just forget about the site entirely.

Google Disavow tool is good to remove bad links from site, you can upload a .txt file that contains spam links domain URL to Google Webmaster tool. It can take but remove all the links.

I'm "just a little guy" and using the disavow tool to remove a little over a few hundred thousand spam links took all of three days, and that includes removing my manual action. For those of you who say it doesn't work...read the damn instructions. You can disavow domains before google even crawls the links, so if you are seeing the link in ahrefs or another crawler just make your list and keep it updated.

As for the repetitive "google wants to see some effort" comment - that "effort" is using the tool correctly, commenting in file, and when you resubmit they want you to be honest. It's not that hard.

I had a manual penalty for months because of threads like this with so much confusion. I was told the disavow tool would hurt me, that it wouldn't work, that I would recover naturally, etc. It was all BS. The tool literally took 3 days, it was easy to use. Overnight my traffic jumped 20%. I still have some catching up to do, but at least I have a clean slate.

Blah blah blah - you never saw it so it didn't happen.

The site below ranks for well over 400 words/phrases tracked daily in the top 20 in Google.
It got tens of thousands of links in short order targeting specifically just 7 as anchor text.

They dropped - not enough for an ULN yet - but down by pages.

Perm 7 out of 400 by luck? No way (lotto is 6 out of 49 and that's 14 million to one against luck) 7 out of 400 - just those 7? My calculator doesn't have enough digits to express the result.

Negative SEO works after P2.1 - and it works FAST. Goole would rather rank irrelevant stuff, off topic and empty than rank a site after a neg SEO attack. Why? Cause individually their employees might be really smart - but as a collective they are as dumb as a bag full of weathergirls at an Ice Cream Vodka all you can drink party

I love how you contradict yourself all within a few words mate. You do realize that the disavow tool is AUTOMATED. No ONE reads the disavow submission. Matt Cunts has told us many times that adding notes to the disavow file is for your tracking and records only and not Googles. So, commenting in the disavow works?

Sure pal. And that's why they also recommend using link removal services and doing a cleanup on your link profiles. Its also the same reason why link removal services even are around. I mean what the hell would be the point of those services if you could simply just disavow your links.

Think about the abuse standpoint for a minute if the disavow was this all powerful "link removal" tool. I could just spam the living fuck out of Google and disavow the links that stuck and I didn't like. Think about the repercussions of reverse engineering their algorithm by abusing that tool?

So again, I ask if you really think that all of those people posting about how the disavow tool doesn't work are bullshitting? The constant threads on Google's forums asking about why it's not working. They must be high?

I have helped my clients and friends with ranking recovery campaigns and the disavow is now the last resort after everything else. It's that unpredictable and frankly a waste of time to wait on it.

You keep submitting those disavows with your special notes to Matt Cutts, the rest of us will do the correct things to get our rankings recovered.
