Negative SEO with scrapebox?

Someone made a post a few days ago about negative SEO that they claimed was done maliciously. The gist of it from my understanding is that a competitor of theirs used a program like scrapebox to spam their link out to hundreds of low page rank and unrelated forums, thereby tricking google into thinking that their forum was spam. I am wondering if this is actually what happened? And could this be a workable strategy for getting competition lower ranks?

I am not wanting to do it myself. I am just wanting to learn about it. Is it true that Google will lower a sites rank if some one spams their link to a bunch of crappy sites?

It may or may not work. I've seen some SEO's accidentally drive their competition to #1 with this.... So don't do it.

Yes its possible - just need a copy of scrapebox, $30 vps and a ~1 million auto approve list.

Negative SEO isn't always malicous though and you can use it to control the SERP results for brand searches/reputation management etc
 
Is pretty retarded they allowed neg SEO into their algo IMO. I really cant see the sense in it.
 
Don't do neg SEO. You better focus to rank your site with quality backlinks instead spamming your competitor site. Beside this, if the site you are trying to spam is well aged you will actually help it to rise in google serps.

Yeah, I see how it could be used to lower the rank of bad sites as well. Where does one get one of these auto approve lists? Why a VPS for scrape box? Anonymity, bandwidth?

Negative SEO works, fire up xRumer and try it for yourself - just spam a competitors link with thousands of pure anchor text links - easy! I advise against it though, it's probably illegal and very unethical - beat them with your mind.
 
The trick to negative SEO is make it look reasonably legit.

i.e If your competitor is ranking well for "icecream gloves"

Do 50-100k blog comment links with 100% "icecream gloves" as the anchor. Then do 30-50k forum profiles with 100% "ice cream gloves for sale" as anchor.

(index the links if you wish)

Wait a couple weeks / month and they'll have a penalty from google which last at least 1-2 months.


Does Negative SEO work? - Yes

Does Google know about negative SEO?

Yes. Even Matt Cutts has said himself in a video "we make no distinction between someones own SEO attempts and someone negatively trying to effect your business". He literally said negative SEO is possible and Google doesn't care. According to him, being screwed for months while you play around with fruitless link removal requests and disavow tool is perfectly acceptable.


Why does Google allow negative SEO?

Money. Simple. Legitimate businesses who are badly effected by SEO, the only way for them to survive is use Adwords.

There is absolutely no way Google made negative SEO possible without serious thought. They know about the consequences and their conclusion was "we don't care".

But for posterity, I will also add that it's a waste of time. The more negativity you put out into the world, the more you will get in return. Don't believe me? Just watch how performing this destroys your schedule and sucks up your precious time. Then turn around and go "was it worth it? what did I get out of this?" There's a 99% chance it wasn't and you got nothing.

On the other hand, if you're already sitting on a million dollars and you're just curious, then I don't see any reason why not to at least test it out on a throwaway domain or something. Just for kicks XD
 
Tensegrity, sorry but it's time to wake up the smell the coffee.

Negative SEO is on the rise and already a widely used practice.

Even for a newbie without their own software it takes $50 on fiverr and 10 minutes to get a very successful negative seo completed.

Who's telling you negative SEO isn't worth it and not working? Matt Cutts? IMers stuck in the glory days?

Sadly it's a case of "get with the times".

ughhh so someone got hit with the penguin and wants to get revenge, what it looks like to me
 
I don't even know what to say to theses dam threads anymore, other than only inadequate site owners that don't have the ability to beat there competitors the right and correct way stoop to these tactics, in my opinion if you have to drop your self down to this level you should not even be in the IM/SEO game because you belong somewhere with the rest of the scum.
