What's the chances of a negative SEO campaign on your competitor backfiring and helping them with the thousands of junk links etc?

I've heard that G doesn't penalize you for unnatural links because of the possibility of negative SEO but it's hard to believe that they don't implement something for these spammy scrapebox links all over blogs, etc...

Any thoughts?

PS: Since I seem to be getting a lot of "that's unethical" type of replies on this thread (kind of ironic on a blackhat forum) I'm editing this post to let you know I have no intentions of doing negative seo. I target micro niches that require nothing like that to rank over my competition (if u can even call it competition). All I was looking for was other peoples experience with this subject, not tips on how to wreck competitors lmao.

what I would like to try is to use the disavow tool as a "link firewall".

you could setup your account to only filter out the backlinks YOU authorize in your list. that way, if someone try to neg seo you, only the links you added to your list will be counted by google. this could make a site much harder to neg seo, if not impossible.

but this need to be tested...

The best negative SEO doesn't add links. It subtracts them.
 
What a negative way for someone to spend their time when they can be doing something more productive. Let the better website show up first, maybe these people should spend more time on what their website is offering to its viewers. I have had many people try this stuff on me and it's extremely unethical - a b!tch move in my opinion.

I don't plan to do it, just a thought that crossed my mind - It would be hilarious if someone launched a negative seo campaign and actually increased their competitors SERPs :P

That wouldn't be hilarious, that'd simply be justice...
 
With services like lindetox (many similar popping out every month) + disavow tool Neg SEO is a waste of time if your competitors have idea what their are doing.

Justice can be humorous..at least the irony has a bit of humor to it. I wonder what G has implemented to prevent benefits of Nuking yourself a million backlinks but still protecting you from being a victim of negative SEO. I have a feeling the actual anchor text of these links plays a role in how the algorithm responds to vast amounts of links (too many links with relevant anchor text has to impact you negatively), but that could go either way...
 
Rankings of my website dropped huge few weeks ago and I thought it's penguin 2.0. Few days ago I was looking at new links to my website and found 5 new domains (around 30 links) with spammy content pointing to my website. 3 of them were already taken down due to some kind of violations. So I uploaded this 5 domains to google disavow. I hope good rankings will come back:)
 
Negative SEO is a dirty game, piss off the wrong person and you'll have an all out niche war. I've seen the top 15 sites in a particular niche disappear overnight because competitors smashing each other.

I can just imagine the type of tactics people are using for negative seo. Building links to bad neighbors has got to be childs play compared to some of the methods used in highly competitive niches. I'll stick w/ my micro niches lol
 
I had real trouble with this, if I was ranking a site, I could easily hit a penalty. But no matter how much rubbish I threw at it I couldn't get it kicked.

I have a lot of thoughts that cross my mind.

Mostly, the thoughts that I don't think of ever enacting do not end up as threads on the forum.

That's great george, maybe I can find you a banana. Anyways I was more curious about it in relation to building mass links for your own site, and how Google might not penalize you for this because anyone could be doing it not necessarily the owner of the site.
