Negative SEO attack FML!! What should I do?

Fired up Ahrefs to check my recent link building efforts and realized that some idiot has been spamming me for the past month with GSA style blog comments and social bookmarks!

This asswipe used gambling and pharma anchors such as casino, tramadol, zithromax etc etc etc. There was like more than 400 links recorded by Ahrefs in a single day!

What should I do now? Does this happen often to you guys? Will Google's disavow tool work?

Any advise much appreciated!

IMO just keep up building strong quality links and ignore that if you see everything normal with you rankings. But IF you see drop in rankings (ongoing), do a disavow.

No, the disavow tool is just an internal tag in case of manual review. It doesn't influence algo ranking. The only questions is, if your site is about pharma/gambling topics. If not, G will automatically discount those links and no need to worry.

If there is such stuff on your site, the links will kick in and you can avoid the worst stress by anchor text diversification.

No, certainly certainly not in the pharma/gambling niche.

Just to clarify, what do you mean "links will kick in and you can avoid the worst stress by anchor text diversification"?
 
Continues to create good quality links and makes a disavow file with "domain:" like that if there are several links from the same domain that are not yet indexing you will save time.

EDIT:
I was already under SEO attacks, 70% of my anchor was spam shit, the rank slowly go down a little for 1-2 weeks and I come back better than the initial positions without doing anything (I see all that 2 month later because it was not my main project) google is smart don't worry about your work, make the disavow file for prevention all will goes well.

Disavowing domains certainly sounds like a plan. However, I haven't been too clean with my linkbuilding (eg. using PBNs etc).

Does disavowing present a risk in such a situation?

Links juice doesn't come all at once, it will take up to 3 weeks till links show effect in ranking. But if they are too offtopic/not niche/site relevant the G crawler sends a soft 404 error back. Which means the links are not counted.

Great info. But is there any chance that disavowing a whole load of links will result in a manual review of some sort?

What have your rankings been like? As other's have mentioned I'd continue to try and build high-quality links and if rankings get worse than create a disavow file and disavow the domains. Hopefully you should be ok and continuing to build good links should combat the effects so you may not even need to disavow links.

First page for a variety of mid to high competition $ keywords. Yes, I guess I'll just wait and see if disavowing is necessary. Only time will tell.

These 2 facts are not linked (without bad puns)
When you disavow a domain or link your just tell to google in automated way you did not create these links and that you think they are artificial or of bad quality and since you are a good pro google matt cutts webmaster your report them because your don't want any trouble, I'm even pretty sure that build trust to the site.

Now if the shit competitor who make the SEO attacks find your PBN links he possibly reported you, so if you are in fear with low-quality PBN you can take this opportunity to disavow the riskiest of them at the same time.

Are these PBN crawler blocked or everyone can see them in ahref?

Very good point regarding the asswipe probably reporting any visible PBN sites too.

I have my own PBN, those are completely hidden from bots, also no brand citations or anything of that sort. Problem is.. I've purchased link building packages from here before and the PBNs they use are not concealed; for all to see in Ahrefs.

Dissavow tool built for exactly this. Just be careful dont disavow too many links or you may disavow some good ones and go down in ranking. I use a mix of semrushes disavow file builder linked to google webmaster tools to get as many as i can.

Last year google penaltied 50% of all links submitted to disavow tool according to their own stats so the tool definately does work.
