Two Clients, two different results. Entirely True.

Client A

Wants a negative article on a random tech site pushed down, from the Google search and buried at least on page 2. It's in spot 3 when I start. I build backlinks, mainly using blog comments on the 12 pages below the negative link. 30 or so links per week, per site, for about 5 weeks. The article is now buried. I repeat the process, and push it down even more. Client = happy!

Client B

Wants a negative article pushed down. Similar to the last, but it is on RipOffReport, and is ranked 5 and 6 for the 2 main keywords. I build backlinks the same way, at the same pace, for about the same amount of time. The results are that article moved up to spots 2 and 3. Client's = pissed, and I'm bothered it didn't work the same way.

What do I do? The client still wants to work with me, but I can't fail again.

More links, less links?
Increase variety of links?
Build links on more/less sites?

If anyone has successfully done this before, and can offer a bit of advice I would be amazingly grateful. Thank you in advance.

The first side had about twice as many searches per month, but the competition was about the same.

how do you know someone wasn't promoting the ripoffreport article even harder than you were promoting the other sites?

It would be easy to tell. Just check the RipOffReport's backlinks.

Why do you think blog comment spam will have a negative impact on SERP?
Are these bad blogs or do you use some bad anchor text and surrounding text?

Try to spam some Chinese / Japanese chat rooms that are already spammed to death with the blue pill.
Most of them don't have captcha so it would be very easy to automate the process.

Why not create an article and backlink THAT about the keyword terms and get that above it?

I was building links on the articles around the negative one. Boosting those up, and since the RipOffReport was't getting any links built, it should be pushed down as the others move up.

The RipOffReport still has 0 links to the page.

Instead of creating new articles, and moving them up from nothing. I decided it would be best to move up the ones that are currently in spots 7-15 or so, as they have less distance to go.

It's a conspiracy!

Keep an eye on it. You have way too small of a sample size to truly extract any data from it. You need to do this on a bigger scale from multiple niches.

ripoffreport is a creditable site in googles eyes. I think by spamming the article on ripoffreport you actually helped it.

The other domain for the other article might have not been a credible domain. You might have hurt it for now but you might actually have just sandboxed it and it will come back to bite you.

how bout 20 yahoo answers accounts 10 q and 10 a and then 1 article spun 500 times uploaded to everywhere? think that would do?

Clarification

I didn't build links on RipOffReport. I built links to the sites that were ranking around it. RipOffReport has 0 links as it did in the beginning, and all the sites around it have gotten links added.

What i would do then is continue what your doing! But also put out a spun article on web 2.0 and article directory's... use SENuke and it won't take long and do some link building to those too.

Then you should have even more of a chance of pushing it down!

What the op is doing is boosting the pages BELOW the target page.. so, in effect, bumping the target page down by boosting the other pages UP. My guess with rip off report is that it is an authority site on its own, so with the other pages it wont be as easy to beat it out of it's position. Try using a wider variety of links. Just out of curiosity, why is the site getting so much negative feedback in the first place? Not that it's my concern, just curious.. hope it's not like that sunglasses jerk who rips people off. (actually, he loves negative reviews.. somehow gets him higher in the serps!)

Wider variety of links sounds good. I just assumed it would have been as easy as my first one.

As for what its about, its just a negative article about my client. Nothing too bad, just a client who wasn't entirely pleased with the service they received. My client said it is affecting their business, and would like it removed.

The on page SEO for RipOffReport is crazy good, the keyword is everywhere, and the density is through the roof. Since its on ROR, I don't see the page getting removed from the index anytime soon.

Whose to say you failed in the first place - maybe if you didnt do what you did the ripoffreport article may have been in the number 1 spot now. It could have been on it's way up regardless of what you did.

My advice would be to continue doing what you're doing. You could also create multiple users on ripoffreport and rebuttal the orignal negative article with good comments, then after a while your client could contact ripoffreport and ask them to remove negative article because it's obviously false and he thinks it's his competition trying to get rid of him...

Hi englandrm... I think you simply need to create a bunch of 2.0 properties with the exact match company name (of the one you're trying to help) and get those ranked above the ROR listing.

Those damn things can be tough... but they will get pushed down. I'd make about 10 new properties, build a few links to each and I think you'd be on your way. I just did this for a client myself and it worked pretty well.

It's way too difficult (IMO) to try to rank other websites that you're not in control of... plus, by doing it this way, you'll actually be giving your client more of a positive presence, rather than just trying to move up random sites.

In my mind, the easiest way to push a page out of position 5, would be to build links on the one in position 6.

If I build web 2.0 properties, won't that take awhile to rank them. I guess more time with results is better than less time without results.

I've just had so much success with SEO and my other clients (most of them want 1 site pushed up), I've never had something not go as I intended for someone who pays me. I'm definitely trying to do what's best for my client, but I'm worried that if I don't get results, I'll come off as a scammer. Just something that has been bouncing around my head.

Well... if its the company name you're trying to rank for (or a proprietary product) there probably isn't much competition for the keyword. The 2.0 properties tend to rank pretty quickly high on the first page. You can give them great keyword density and name them perfectly so you get a good match in the url.

My concern about the sites that are 5,6,7, etc. is that they may not be seo'd very well (although you can determine that) and it may be more of a struggle to get them moving.

I've done a good number of these over the past few years. If you'd like you can PM me more details and I'd be happy to take a look... or if not, I certainly understand that as well.

Never ever in any circumstances should you build backlinks to a competitor's site in hopes of getting them penalized. it may get them sandboxed in the short term but in the long run, if they are good at what they do, they can recover and those backlinks you built for them will only help them. any good SEO professional should know that building backlinks to a competitor is NOT a good idea

Your advice is right, but englandrm wasn't building backlinks to competitors in hopes of hurting their rankings... he/she was building backlinks hoping the lower sites would move up and outrank the negative review on the page that their client has (in effect, driving the ripoff report down in the rankings)... a different situation then you might be thinking...
