Most books on Amazon about SEO are pretty out of date by the time they go to print etc.
Aaron Wall's book was one of my favourites even though the version I read is about two years old now.
Being honest you generally don't learn a lot more from SEO ebooks than you would be going through all of the forums here. The only difference is that the book is more structured.
I would recommend reading Seobook, I think there's an out of date version on this forum and exploring each topic a little deeper by finding threads on here as you go along.

SEO tactics change all the time. What worked 6 months ago doen't work today.

the offsite factors that influence your optimization change a lot more than your actual onsite optimization
for basic onsite optimization you need to be learning how to implement the following at a mimimum
title tags
header tags
description meta tag
option keyword meta tag
content styling ie bolding keywords
optimized anchor text and links
alt tags for images
image sizes keeping them small
xml sitemap inclusion
rss.xml inclusion
these few things have hardy changed at all and have always played an important part of onsite seo
the tricky part comes after this and figuring out your offsite optimization - this is where the internet, books, videos and tutorials will really help, as there are so many different factors, that people tend to agree and disagree on and info does change
taking action yourself and testing each method of offsite optimization is probably your best bet to see what works for you - theres plenty to read here on BHW!
if your going to buy a book off amazon, try and find out when it was published - also look at the book reviews too...

I'm thinking about doing a free video course on SEO, would anyone be interested? I have yet to see a good video course that gives more than 1 or 2 good tips, I have a handful of more 'advanced' ones.
Maybe I'll do a beginner and advanced course and sell it on DP, but BHW would get it for free
