I have found a local forum niche. There is a competitor but the forum looks dead (no posts since 8/23/13) but it has around 8000 back links. The site also has a very shitty design. It looks like an early 1998-2000 design (seriously). Will this still be hard to outrank? I know very little about seo. Can someone provide me with link to free page rank checkers, etc. Just the general stuff I need to know. Sorry if that's asking too much. This will be my first serious website.
Need some seo advice.

Hmm just by sheer numbers 8000 back links is a little daunting. Also, if the site has an old design then it may be an aged domain which is harder to outrank as well. What really matters is the quality of its back links though.
It really depends on your budget. Check out its backlinks with ahrefs.com and post a screenshot here because you haven't really given us enough to work with.
Also, don't worry too much about the page rank of the domain. Its not as indicative as manually checking out its back links.

Well check with ahrefs.com and study about his backlinks. Also check with the domain PA and DA as these factors also play some important factor for ranking. You should be able to outrank your competitor with quality backlinks and power of social signals

It's kill or be killed, if you can't maintain your site for 4 months you deserve to be killed...
So you would rather build manual backlinks for several months and then find out the competitor's domain expired because he doesn't care about his site anymore? Who's stupid then?

however, he doesn't maintain a website over 4 months, it's good for you..try to improve your website, why you're trying to build spammy links to your competitor.. on the same time, why can't you create some powerful links rather building some spammy sick links :detective

I'm not sure what is your point Droidz? are you trying to penalized that site or what ? if this is your competitor and You want to beat him then identity those 8000 links and make better quality links than those 8,000 and soon your website will be on higher position than him
