Need questions answered newbie

I want to build a site but i have somethings which need clarification.
How do i go about researching my keyword, seeing competition etc?
What is panda? Do I need to hire anyone to make my website or can i do it myself?

For keyword research:
- Download Traffic Travis or Market Samurai or both
- Use Google Keyword External (Google it)

Web Design:
This can be done by yourself if your skilled in this area. If you have the money you may want to consider hiring a professional.

You don't need to worry about Google Panda. And, use Wordpress to build your site - it's the easiest, most customizable, and pretty much everyone uses it.
