As per my experience I have hosted my photography web site from 2 hosting companies, Zettahota,Waxspace I like both companies, provided me almost 100% uptime. Go for anyone of them.
Uptime is always a problem .. most of the companies promises 99.9% but you never get it.
hostgator - their uptime got better in the last months ..now I'm getting 99.8%
somebody mention hostripples. I was happy with their customer support but uptime is really bad
67.16% (last 24 hours) due to a urgent maintenance problem server was down for more than 8 hours !!!
95.31% (last 7 days)
98.77% (last 30 days)
I sent them an email regarding this stats and "we understand you are having problems but it will get better in the future. thanks for your co-operation" WTF ?!?! I would stay away from it
Try different servers use uptimerobot.com (it's free, you will get an email each time the server goes down and another email when the server is up n running again) to monitor your domains (servers) and see which ones are really offering good up-times. Do your tests, pick the bests and share your results
Why you don't go for VPS hosting ? Good configured VPS will have 0 downtime . Well of course for 5$ you cant get any but I can offer you 9.90/mo SSD Utra fast Unamaged VPS with 1Gbps connection.
The main problem with shared hosting is that almost 95% of the providers out there are overselling and or if they don't .. Some sites on same machine can make the server crash or unstable .
