I haven't done local white hat seo before but a friend's business needs some serious help. A trio had the business and the one owner basically ran it into the ground before being bought out by his two other partners.

They're trying to build it back up and want to do more with social media and the web.

Any tips or tricks or information you can point me to that I can use to help my friend?

    Thanks in advance.

Just look for local citation sites and submit your business info. Google it as "Local citation sites".

Check out the local SEO section here on Black Hat World and try to find Techxan's old posts.

Just to give you a general idea of what you'll need to do, you should list your friend's name, address, and phone number (NAP) in local directories; be sure to keep this information consistent, as this consistency is what search engines use to rank businesses locally.

Your friend will also need a website and to claim or create social media pages on every major social media website. This is mostly to prevent brandjacking, but your friend can also use these social media pages to interact with clients (B2C businesses usually use Facebook and Twitter while B2B businesses use Linkedin more).

For the website's on-page SEO, mentioning the name of the city and the address on different pages across the site will help out greatly, although other than this, you can just do regular on-page SEO.

As for the off-page SEO, local businesses tend to link to local businesses, so procuring backlinks from businesses in the area and creating citations is a good strategy.

Local directories that are of high quality (Yelp and such) definitely help. If you don't already, register a "My Google Page".

Getting in the google "snack pack" is imperative for local business success.
    You need:
    -google reviews
    -tons of Citations
    -and a small PBN

Local SEO mainly depends on how good your reputation is in the internet, few important aspects:
    1. One needs to have a physical business address
    2. working phone number
    3. Good reviews in Google local, Yelp and other places,
    4. A good and balanced SEO plan.
    5. Some social media postings

These things if done properly and regularly will rank any local business in lesser time frame.

Great advice from Zwielicht, on top of that I would suggest that you get your friend involved as much as possible for content writing, social interaction etc, if the business has been run into the ground then you need to rebuild the company and the brand as a whole - which means lots of input from the company itself.

I would suggest building high quality profiles - social and otherwise and getting out there into the community to let people know what the company has to offer.

Back this manual work up with some citations etc as Zwielicht suggested.

    good luck!
