I've began to start on a template for my blog farm setup here's the first domain I've chose to work with.

you need to do lots of work on there, use graphics in post, banner, background...

featured post through smooth slider will be another good option for you...

can also use teaser for displaying recent posts...

I think a few graphics in posts should do the trick, I don't think it's a great idea to overdevelop the way the site looks. It's pretty easy to follow as it is. Throw some monetization on that site tho.

I heard so many stories that some successfull blogs were actually pretty horrid with how they were presented. But if you can get the information across well to the reader and point them to your ads/monetization without feeling like they are forced to then that is all you need. Especially if you are making a blog farm

If you are subcutaneously unpleasing to people, without being FUGLY! You will get ad clicks at least (depending on what revenue stream you are going for) because subconsciously they will want to leave your site and will go right for the links... Thats what I tried to work it, its nice looking but even I kinda want to just leave and go somewhere else hah.
