I have a website with domain name something like this:

BuyProductName.net

It is an exact match domain and competition is medium. My main focus it to turn it into an authority domain with around 1000 pages of content.

Should I continue with this exact match domain or pick a more brandable domain and move my content over there? I don't want my site to be penalized for having a commercial keywords in it.

Yes, if you're planning on building an authoritative 1,000+ page site, purchase and use a brandable domain name instead of an EMD.

Is the "product name" trademarked?

i.e. "buyMcDonaldsFrenchFries dot com"

No it is a general term. More like BuyFrenchFries.net. It is based on the news and reviews of the products and not intended for selling things.

Hmmm.. I'd create both and maintain them individually for the first 3-6 months. Then based on initial rankings / traffic or whatever benchmark you want to use, you could just redirect the less successful one to the other one, or just continue to maintain both if both are progressing nicely.
If you had to pick one though, I'd stick with the EMD.. honestly only a manual penalty would effect you and I doubt you will get big enough to appear on that grid.. maybe I'm underthinking it..
Good luck with your authority domain regardless.

go ahead start building! Dont wait!

if the name not TM ,I will run with it and i still develop another name redirect to the first ..if something wrong ...I have substitution already.

How are you planning on filling 1000 posts worth of content about just one product? Seems like you're unnecessarily restricting yourself if your goal is to actually build an authority site. If you're spinning content anyway, why not build and maintain both? Assuming of course, that the niche is valuable enough to support having two sites. The niche site could target a narrow audience while your authority site draws visitors from a broader market.

have same question

It is better to try to get branded domain to build a authority site with huge number of pages.

Yeah I have just registered a brandable domain. Thanks to all for suggestion.

As most others have said; if it's not trademarked or otherwise protected, go with it!
