I wrote a 3k word article and Im wondering if linking references to other sites are beneficial to me. These sites are high DA sites such as pubmed, medical journals etc.

Probably not beneficial. Link juice flows from sites linking to sites being linked to. Not vice versa. If that were the case spammers could set up brand new blogs, link to a bunch of high DA blogs and rank fast. Unless you can get them to link back to you. That would be ideal ;)

I believe it is beneficial. Perhaps not in terms of link equity being passed to your website but it is in terms of building credibility and trust when referencing a stablish and well-known website for fact-checking.

If it would be beneficial to a reader, it will be beneficial to your rankings. As far as SEO purposes, outbound links will help search engines determine relevance for your page.

I dont think this is right. This may only apply to new web properties but in my limited testing linking out to sites greatly increases your relevance in googles eyes.

I will be doing a case study on this at some point since there is a lot of interest one way or the other.

small example: wrote 1000 words of unique content with a couple of pictures and google passed on indexing.

I was pissed so much content had not indexed so I wrote a 350 word article with 5 links I wanted to index and google picked it up right away and its been indexed a couple of weeks.

Google also indexed the first 3 links on that list which were all Quora questions I had written.

According to the SEO tool I use, linking out to authority sites in your field makes you look more legitimate.

Found an interesting study on the "YMYL" topics and ranking. In it they reference outbound links as an important factor: https://www.sistrix.com/blog/the-fall-of-examine-com-is-google-allowed-an-opinion/

Alright thanks for the advice guys I'll probably just put all the links related to the niche in the references!
