I'm currently working on a site that i'm trying to rank "state + keyword" pages. In each "state + keyword" page I have about three or five different listings.

The keywords are very uncompetitive, and there is only really one major player, so I wanna give this company a run for its money.

Here's the current Structure

Home -----> main listing page with links to every state & every listing ----> The state page is a child of the main listing page so /keyword/state+keyword

I also did my best to remove any link leakage from page to page...

I did this by creating custom main navigation bars for each page and following the same structure as breadcrumbs. I also removed all footer links besides the ones on the homepage.

Since i implemented this structure

My "state + keyword" pages fell off the face of google search and was replaced by the main listing page, but with a worse rank.

Before I had a drop down bar with every state and it was working well..

So my question is how the hell do I just rank the "state + keyword' pages and how should I backlink these pages, to make this the most cost and time effective???

Oh, I also created boards on pintrest for each state and now the pins are out ranking my actual site.. The pins are on first page, but my listing pages aren't... Very frustrating...

  1. I'm guessing your site is new? If so, then if you've just created dozens of pages overnight, you might be sandboxed for a while till some trust is established in Google's eyes.
  2. Apart from waiting it out a bit, you will want to try building a few links to some of these newer inner pages. You could also just write some content on your blog with appropriate inner links to these pages and then build/buy some links to this blog post.
  3. Try to get some user generated content on the pages to allow for more indepth uniqueness.
  4. Pinterest will out rank you because of the higher authority. It shows that you have some way to go before you establish authority in the space.

1. The site is about a year old and that is what I was thinking I just need to sit for a little bit awhile longer.

2. Should i point the links from the blog to "state + keyword" page or "main listing page"? What do you think is going give me the best overall results?

Also, do you think i should remove all the listings from the "main listing page" and have it segregated by state only?

Currently the main listing page is setup like this

H1 = Main keyword

H2 = "similar keyword to h1" + state by state
Links to state pages + keyword

Current Listing + keyword
Picture links to every listing

3. That's a good call i'll open up the comment section of each listing page.
