Need Advice on Sitebuilding & Domain...

hi guys...

...after lurking around long time, reading, learning etc. - time has come to take action.
so i know what i want to do and how it should work - but basically i am a noob on the practical side of things.
to round it up - time has come to take the first steps and i need some experienced advise on how to go about things so i reach the desired goal without running into problems that could be easily avoided if i would have had more expierience.

we are about to build a site to sell a product which is in development.
the site is going to be a multi-language one and we will use wordpress to set them up.
we would choose english as default and set up other languages as sub-domains so you can change them via button.
as we sell our product there and the main purpose is not to monetize the site itself - what are important points to be taken into consideration doing so - as for keywords, seo-wise, ranking etc. considering that it is a multi-language one.

the emd is available for us in all varieties. as we discussed which domain to take we would stick to the .com-one in first place.
i would consider to take a.e. the .net & .org-extensions as well. first off to have em in hand - but then to redirect them to our main-page.
how would we then operate with the other sites/extensions? in terms of ranking them etc. etc.

any helpfull guidance is very much appreciated.

It's a vague question.

Is it one item or is it a product that will have many options? How many items will you be selling at your new website? How competitive is your competition?

You can make an affiliate program - so any other domain extension would be probably registered by your affiliates Win-win

ok - to be a bit more precise:
we will be selling one product there. it has various options but these are included in that one particular product.
after some basic research we couldn`t really find any direct competition to it. thats why we are developing a solution that combines multiple options in one.

the basic question i have is how to operate with multiple domain-extensions.
if we choose the .com as main one - and set up a redirect for a.e. the .net & .org - how to proceed on that? do i duplicate the main-site and redirect or how do i go about ranking the redirect-sites for the chosen keywords also?

as it will be a multi-language one - we will have a default language a.e. english and then create sub-domains for each language that will be added and duplicate the content of course.
i know this is vague too - but it`s just about getting a basic picture on how to set up a structure like that properly and to avoid mistakes that could have easily been avoided if having more expirience.
any basic/important things to have in mind doing so? any no-go`s to watch out for?

any usefull insights on that are much appreciated as i am just working my way into that.

an affiliate or referral programm is definitely an option we might come up with...
...and as we don`t plan on getting all emd-extensions of course there will be enough to be grabbed.

You make only 1 main website (on .com domain), all other domains - 301 redirect to *.com
You could make languages not only like en.website.com, fr.website.com, but also like website.com/en and website.com/fr

Are you worried about content duplication among the site? You don't have to. You are not duplicating, you are translating.

yes i know - and will go with "website.com/xxx"
and no, i am not worried about duplicate content - as it is translated, just like you said.
just generally asking if there are a.e. traps to avoid or anyone has experience in that and can share some insights.
like in regard to internal linking structure, offline-seo etc.

...so the idea would be to have 3 sites to rank for keywords instead of only one - right?
so how do i operate with the sites i use for redirect? in terms of content and alike. so how do i set up the redirect sites? duplicating the main site and redirect wouldn`t make sense right - as it was duplicate content all along the way.

or would it be more benefical for us to get the keyword-domain for each country instead of using subdomains?

You make only 1 site (.com)
You promote only 1 site (.com)
You add to your hosting 3 sites (.com, .net, .org)
In root folder of .com you put your main website files.
In root folder of .net and .org you put .htaccess file with 301 redirect to .com

The reason you're getting limited responses is because no one knows what you're trying to do here.

The strangest part I find is you say there is no competition, so is there any searches for your item? Are you registering all those domains because you want to trademark them? Like the other answer, why not register the dot com, put up your site and let everyone else register the other domains? Chances are they would be selling your products. If you want to protect them, just register them and keep them private. There is no need to forward all of the other extensions to the main one unless you have ideas for multiple websites on them.

Just buying 4 new previously unregistered domains and pointing 3 of them to the first one using redirects won't help you gain spots in the SERPS.

sorry for being so vague or not really understandable...
...the lack of understanding why and how you would use and benefit from a redirect brought this up. after researching more i now understand why this was confusing. wrong approach to what i had in mind.

i didn`t meant to say that there is no competition, like there are no searches on keywords. as i researched i just didn`t find a matching product that does the same as the one we want to develop. theres others that cover one part or another of it.
i guess i got on the wrong track thinking about not only ranking one site for the keywords - but to be able to rank on other spots as well for the chosen keywords.

so thank you alex on summarising how to do it...
