I work for a company that sells Local SEO services. In a nutshell we list companies in our directory but we also optimize their google local. Each of our directories are niche specific. For example we have a directory specifically for florists.

From a sales perspective I am looking for ways to prospect clients over the phone and via email and even snail mail. Does anyone know of any good threads or resources I can look into? Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

my suggestion is to learn as much as you can from where you are, have patience, and expand when you're ready.

Um, ok, not the reply I was looking for but thanks. I was thinking along the lines of generating an seo report and giving it to them and explain where they lack, etc, etc?

Is all you're doing providing them a link in the directory or do you also do onsite seo + backlinking?

Anyways, you can generate reports that have a things like:

Keyword, Global Monthly Searches, Local Monthly Searches, CPC, Current Position, Estimated Current Traffic, Estimated Traffic if #1, and Adwords value of that increase in traffic.

That shows them how many visitors per month they would stand to gain from ranking #1 for a particular keyword and what that would cost them if they used adsense ads to get it. You get this data for a few different keywords and send it to them in a table with some type of a sales pitch saying the adwords value of the traffic you can get them will be worth $x,xxx /month and you will charge $xxx per month.

Do they have a website? Is on page SEO present? What have they done in the way of offsite SEO? You had to have read enough around here to get the idea. Not trying to be critical and I apologize if that's how it comes across, but if you have an understanding of SEO, by now. Local businesses are easy to rank....do a keyword analyzation for your local market. Perhaps I'm not hearing the question/problem correctly, but have you analyzed you're competitors?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the OP is asking for resources to assist in developing a strategic cold calling / prospecting plan.

The problem with the cold calling approach via ph/e-mail etc.
is most every local biz has been bombarded by Hack SEO companies and it as left a sour taste.

this is 2012, instead of cold calling, market by personality, build a referral system, use social media, in other words, let them get to know YOU, put a face with your name. Give them a reason to want to do biz with you.

hit the search box here there's loads of threads
Check out some of Harro's stuff
and Taktikal had a nice share on the subject as well.

ah, my bad, this isn't so much SEO as it is just straight sales/off site marketing. Craigslist and other local resources are good. As far as phone contact, that's really dependent upon your personality.

winchester has some good stuff on here, a 3part series, if memory serves.

also, there is a half-decent wso floating around (forget what it is called, but perhaps others know) that details a pretty clever method involving mailing the client's newspaper adverts/yellow page ads to them...anybody know the one i mean?

I can see what you're thinking. Firstly check out this thread http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackh...e-maps-placement-letter-gets-new-clients.html

I know it is specific to Google Places but with a bit of lateral thinking and a bit of spinning you could turn this into an seo report along with a traffic report showing how many potential customers they are missing out on. Check it out, it's a solid method imho.

i do a good deal of local marketing, and the most important thing is to show the potential client credibility, and data on how you can increase their ROI

If you can show them spending $10 is going to make them $20. It should be an easy sale.

I used to do that years ago; Ad critiquing and recommendations on improvements and alternate options...

I did hundreds of the damned things, and did them professionally, as I do a lot of copywriting, and all I ever got back was some snide comments. People don't like any kind of critique on what they're doing. Even if you come up with really positive ways of suggesting alternative routes, they take it as criticism.

You really need to engage with people, and the best way is either phone or face to face, until you've built enough reputation and testimonials to speak for themselves.

Cold calling in stages still works. 1st call is to establish who to talk to, and the main problem is finding this out. 2nd call is to get more info to try and send something through, and the 3rd is to try and speak to the person in question.

It's hard work, and I'm glad I don't have to do it anymore, but I did my fair share!

Traffic Travis has a free software you can use to run reports to send to people. Most people dont understand or respond to the reports!
