Which VPN you use depends on what you want to do with it. If your goal is true privacy, most US based companies would not be good.
Also, when you search for reviews of VPN's, there are endless fake reviews... Take what you read with a grain of salt. Wilder Security Forum is a good place to get info.
I would consider at least these factors at least before choosing a VPN provider:
- Which jurisdiction are they under? (US is a no-go)
- What do they do if they receive DMCA?
- How do they respond to courts demands to identify a user?
- Do they keep any logs of IP's? If yes, for how long?
- Do they share any info they hold with 3rd parties?
- Do they log your payment, and can your payment info in any way be linked to your account?
- Do they allow Bittorrent?
Personally I would recommend Mullvad and AirVPN.
Unfortunately, hidemyass and all the other companies that are usually recommended when people ask for VPN recommendations do not really provide true privacy. They are ok if you just wanna watch streams on american websites while abroad though!
