So I'll be travelling all over Europe and Asia using mostly free public wifi. I don't want to be paranoid about my info getting jacked. Can someone please recommend me some VPN services?

    Thanks!

Just as long as you have an internet connection it should work ;)

A free alternative is hotspot shield.

It should work from anywhere. You install their software and when you surf, all data go through their servers and is encrypted.

    hidemyass.com/how-vpn-works
    goldenfrog.com/vyprvpn/why-vpn

EDIT: hotspot shield spams you with ads

Many abused vpns are blocked in Asia, i.e. Hidemyass. In Europe you should be fine.

Haven't used it in a long time, but they had top banner above all websites you would visit. Things might have changed now.

I've used Private Internet Access and they were pretty good, and they have a ton of different payment options including bitcoin and you can even pay using gift cards from many major retailers. They allow you to adjust the encryption depending on how much you need, where if you just need to view blocked videos you can get max speed by setting no encryption, and if you need to do online banking you can set max encryption. They even include a kill switch feature.

Which VPN you use depends on what you want to do with it. If your goal is true privacy, most US based companies would not be good.

Also, when you search for reviews of VPN's, there are endless fake reviews... Take what you read with a grain of salt. Wilder Security Forum is a good place to get info.

I would consider at least these factors at least before choosing a VPN provider:

    - Which jurisdiction are they under? (US is a no-go)
    - What do they do if they receive DMCA?
    - How do they respond to courts demands to identify a user?
    - Do they keep any logs of IP's? If yes, for how long?
    - Do they share any info they hold with 3rd parties?
    - Do they log your payment, and can your payment info in any way be linked to your account?
    - Do they allow Bittorrent?

Personally I would recommend Mullvad and AirVPN.

Unfortunately, hidemyass and all the other companies that are usually recommended when people ask for VPN recommendations do not really provide true privacy. They are ok if you just wanna watch streams on american websites while abroad though!

I basically just want to protect my credit card info when booking a hotel/hostel on a public network.

I use hidemyass, just be careful not to run linkbuilding tools from your system when using them.

I'll be using it for basic browsing and accommodation bookings. Who do I go with?
