Why do I need articles spinners?
Do the major articles sites check for dupe articles? Or is it because of Google?

Or is it needed only when copying someone else's article?

The sites have a plagiarism checker themselves. It doesn't have to be a direct copy.

Sites like Associated Content, EzineArticles and GoArticles have dupe content filters on them. (Only if the editor recognizes it as dupe content, 80% unique filter, and 60% unique filters, respectively if I remember right.)

There's also a second point to using an article spinner. If you use it for content generation on one of your money sites, you use it to avoid duplicate content penalties.

For sites like AC and Ezine you want your articles to be at least 85% unique for them to pass Copyscape and be considered new unique content.

To avoid Google penalties Jekashi is right, 60% is what you're aiming for

Since you posted this in the associated content section I assume that you are talking with respect to AC

as far as i know if u submit duplicate content to AC for 3 times they will ban you...
