My Wordpress site became super slow overnight

Hi guys,

My Wordpress site became super slow overnight. I contacted my hosting company, and they say I have several processes running that hog resources. When they try to delete them, they get created again. They say it's not much they can do, and said it's something on my site.

What I tried to far:
- Optimized the DB
- Disabled WP-Rocket (some users complain about the new version)

Didn't work

What I have:
- Cloudflare (Web core vitals > 90)
- 22 plugins (all updated)
- Image optimizing using Smush

Any idea what the issue can be?

Try to check the crawling rate from bots, and in case set a limit. I had similar issues recently and apparently bing and apple bot where generating crazy amount of crawl requests

You need to analyze the logs, try to ask the hosting to check for you
 
not an expert, but you could start by telling us which plugins are those 22 plugins. 22 is a lot, btw.

Hi,
I use a Google tool to check insight for my own website and when it finishes, it gives me some appropriate advices for my website and my CMS. Try it https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/
When you said "super slow" what does it mean ? 1 minute ? 30 second ? Only in front like an user or also when you tried to edit (by example) an article ?
 
Wordpress website making processes and after deleted it creates the processes again?

seems like you’re using bad nulled plugins
 
Alright, so I blocked that one IP address and things did improve. It's not like before, but now I can at least do some work. Maybe there are still many processes running and the hosting company need to clean them up.
 
Update again: I found one more IP address in the log that occurred frequently, and after adding that to the IP ban list, the speed is back to normal. Yay.
So I assume this was a DDOS attack? So there's a way to bypass Cloudflare and load pages directly from the server?
 
I recently had this issue also. I found that restarting apache2 worked for me.

Well done for fixing things. When you do a who.is on the IP address's, what does it say?
 
22 plugins is a lot. Have you tried disabling them one by one?
 
I'm surprised your site loads at all with that many plugins.

My site is super fast. It passes all web core vitals with over 95 on both mobile and desktop.
 
Install Wordfence plugin if you haven't already. It blocks most attacks and you can limit bots. This should take care of such issues without you manually monitoring the site all the time.
