Been lurking here for the past 3 months and picked up an insane amount of information!
I have an e-commerce website and recently got the 'unnatural links' email from G. I have been able to recover for the most part by following 'extrawinner' advice and by buying some services from here. The reason I got hit (I think) was because of using an automated link wheel generating system and setting it onto overdrive. Anyway, getting slapped by big G really scared the shit out of me and I would not like a repeat slapping thankuverymuch.
My strategy going forward:
1. Seems like Web 2.0 is really working. So I am concentrating on making 3 Web 2.0 (Squidoo, Multiply, Weebly...) every-day and then SB blasting the hell out of them at night. I will also be doing the automated link wheel for them as well instead of on my MS. My thinking is that even if one of them gets knocked out in a week (account closed, spam) it wouldn't matter since I will have new Web 2.0 shields coming online. These Web 2.0 would be linked directly to my money site. (Not sure if G will penalize me for having all these Web 2.0 pointing to my MS). The other thinking was the fact that if I ever, God forbid, have to dump my site and start afresh due to Bigfoot or whatever asinine algorithm G develops, I can simply point the Web 2.0 to the new site and be on my merry way.
2. The second thing I am doing is concentrating on using generic anchor texts (like this, check it out, awesome) or my naked URL as that is something a lot more natural than what I was doing before which was 'buy this' everywhere. (back in my stupid, young days). Hopefully this strategy will pan out and my e-commerce site will make millions :)

1. Web 2.0s are working well, yes--right now. There's no guarantee that they'll be working 6 months down the line nearly as well as they're working now. Social bookmarks also used to work extremely well until they got spammed out of recognition and are nowhere near as effective now as they were a year or two ago.

2. This is spot on. Google is valuing a diversified anchor text profile more than they ever have, so the more links you can get with varied anchors the better.

Web 2.0s still work well if you use unique content. I do not use spun content for them these days; I write different articles for different properties instead.

Diverse links and high quality and you are golden.

don't be afraid to get some google +1s, social bookmark, and build high pr pages to your main url as well

I did the same for my t-shirt website but had no results ended up paying rankpay and got screwed from penguin

slap it hard with twitter/pinterest.

Create "networks" of social media accounts that repin/RT each other.

I would agree with giftguru's advice as that is a real solid one. Diverse anchor profiles and top quality links is the best thing to do now.
