Using CloudFlare may help
I always have cloudFlare enabled, seems like that didn't help ..
Cloudflare can be good if your site is not currently under attack and in situations where your site is being attacked by nubs but if they are not doing a simple syn flood attack you may want something a little more beefy otherwise cloudflare can become expensive.
OVH have some very cheap DDoS protected hosting plans and you should be able to use cloudflare free alongside a DDoS protected host like OVH for that bit of added protection.
Yeah, cloudflare paid plans will protect you but their free plan will only protect against syn flood attacks if memory is correct. There are a few different DDoS protected hosts but most will only protect up to a certain point and if the attacker is determined they can crank it up and get your domain taken offline regardless.
OVH had the highest protection of all of the hosts I found when I was in a similar position last year. I am not affiliated with them and they are not my favourite host but they did not flinch with the attack I was under when I went with them.
no hosting company will let you do illegal activity on their server.
